Owner description: History As a symbol of the Archiepiscopal Chancellery of Ravenna, San Vitale is one of the greatest works of late Roman art. Famous for its mosaics commissioned by Archbishop Maximian (546/556 AD), the basilica is a place of contemplation. While the body descends its steps the spirit rises to the Truth. A masterpiece to be admired for its evident beauty and its hidden, precise, evocative theological argument.

These mosaics from the fifth and sixth centuries are as fresh as if they were created yesterday. It is an amazing feeling to experience the modern minds of the creators speaking directly to us.

So well preserved! The entry is part of the ticket fee for the Galla Placida mausoleum etc but even it if weren't, this is one of the best representations of Byzantine churches around

If you have a couple of days in Ravenna, buy the joint ticket that lets you see the main (religious) sites for a single fee. Most importantly, start with the Basilica San Vitale before going on to the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia a few steps away. They feature stunning 6th century mosaics, probably unlike anything you have ever seen before

This is the place. If you love mosaics as I do, these are the most beautiful and probably the most famous (and you must walk next door to the mausoleo de Galla Placidia to see the starry skies!) We heard that people actually come for just a day to fly through the mosaic sites such as these---- imagine when there are so many to see in Ravenna! Do what we did and spend a few days. It's a lovely, lovely city!

You won't find better 6th century mosaics anywhere in the world. Whether you look up, look down or eye level, you see some of the most beautiful art everywhere. Ravenna is not an italian tourist trap, so it makes the visit that much nicer. Definitely worth a visit to Ravenna, even if only for this Basilica. But Ravenna has so much more to offer.
