Taste the best pisarei e faso you can find here around, or tortelli con la coda with butter and parmigiano, two of traditional dishes of Piacenza, and you'll come back more and more.

Pisarei are small dumplings made of flour, faso are beans in a tomato sauce. Tortelli are pieces of pasta with an interior of spinach and ricotta, a delicious fresh cheese.

You can taste also parma ham with small vegetables, salmerino (a delicious river fish) or parmigiana di melanzane (aubergine or eggplant cooked with tomato and parmigiano reggiano).

Wine of choice is naturally a red gutturnio, locally produced.

“Excellent”

I don't care much for the gloomy minimalist décor and the absence of a good-sized sign to indicate its location (the first time we walked past it at least three times before noticing it. But we returned, and this tells you the whole story. The food on offer is truly outstanding: nowhere outside Piacenza, let alone outside Italy, could you taste the real Piacentina cuisine prepared like grandmother did in the best tradition: spinach and ricotta tortelli, simply dressed with melted butter and sage, stracotto anolini (ravioli stuffed with beef stew) in a divine stock made with beef, pork and capon, the ultra-local pisarei e fasoeu (bread gnocchi and red beans in a tomato sauce, and you will be nonplussed by the stracotto d'asina con polenta (braised donkey meat with crisp cornmeal and buckwheat cakes). Everything washed down with some delightfully unusual red Pantera wine by Luretta, a winery in a nearby valley, producing a very limited number of these bottles. Friendly service, good value. A keeper.
