Description: The Golden Rooster restaurant is a renowned local in Parma where you can taste the flavors of the culinary tradition of the city in an intimate and friendly atmosphere, perfect for any occasion. ELEGANCE AND TASTE Located in the historic center of the city, the restaurant Gallo d'Oro is located in a side street Farini, a quiet and private area adjacent to the local nightlife district of Parma. The ideal for which I want to pass an alternative evening of good food and fun.

We had our first dinner in Parma here, it was recommended by our hotel. Very friendly restaurant with very good local food and wines. They have excellent parma ham that they slice on "machines" placed right in front of the bar. We had a great time!

We came to Parma because we heard it has the best food in Italy. Hard to dispute that! Four different and excellent raviolis, four secondi: horse meatballs, rabbit, pork cheeks, and an eggplant casserole/lasagna. Sometimes we might try to be adventurous and regret it, but not in this case -- everything was great. Also a great cheese plate, a half liter of house red (reasonably good) and a good cheap bottle of Parma red. For four people120€, which felt like a real value. What a wonderful town.

We asked a local to recommend a restaurant -- he recommended three -- but when we said we only had time to enjoy a really traditional Parma lunch in one, he immediately said, "Then it has to be the Gallo D'Oro!"

It doesn't always work to ask a local for a recommendation but boy this time it really paid off! Absolutely one of the best meals in three weeks of travel through Italy.

We sat outside in the front (the inside is very atmospheric but it was a beautiful day...) and started with a mezzo litro of vino rosso and the mixed Parma meats appetizer. All excellent -- but we expected that (after all, it IS Parma!) The bread was fresh (not always our experience...) and the wine was some of the best "house red" we had in our travels.

Then the second course arrived: one dish was the combination of tricolor ravioli (I think spinach, buffalo mozzarella and pork but not sure), very nice -- and a dish which you might call carbonara but -- that would be like saying Mozart wrote music. The caronara (not called that...look for the pasta with bacon) was the waitresses' suggestion. She knew what she was doing. In fact, she watched from afar as I took my first bite, then smiled at the expression that doubtless crossed my face.

Sorry, but I'm reduced to the monosyllabic, WOW. Hands down the best pasta dish I've ever had. Anywhere. Perfect creamy sauce. Unbelievably flavorfull big chunks of bacon. Don't go to Parma and NOT order that dish. Really. I've had lots of carbonara - -not sure I will ever order it again outside this restaurant.

We had a dessert and coffee and the bill for the whole meal was quite reasonable.

BTW, visit the WC if only for an excuse to see the rest of the restaurant which is very cool -- lots of nooks & crannies & the wait staff actually cuts your meats on a deli slicer when you order -- that should give you some idea of how seriously this place takes its food! And yes, it's clearly a local favorite in spite of being just a block off the main square on a small narrow street.

the food is excellent; the service perfect; the setting is magic: Parma hangs by the dozens hanging from the ceiling, and three of those oldfashioned slicing machines to provide the freshest Parma ham cuts you can imagine; try the torta fritta (deep fried bread pastry) with Prosciutto di Parma! and the price is absolutely honest!
