I was in Modena the weekend of the 17 August. Literally everything in the city was closed for the summer vacation period. Many of the restaurants I researched prior to my trip were closed – mid august to the end of august. I found this restaurant by just walking around the neighborhood surrounding the hotel – Canal Grande- it is 2 blocks from the hotel located on a very quiet street. It has a very pretty terrace area out front; however the inside of the restaurant is beautiful and more interesting. The food is excellent even when compared to the quite high Modenese standards. I dined on the menu turistica which consisted of 4 courses for 35 Euros. Add in an 11 euro bottle of Lambrusco and you have an excellent meal. The higlight of the meal was the Tortoloni with ricotta and sunflower seeds. The ricotta was made from the milk of white cows. Very unusual. Topped with the sunflower seeds it was simple and delicious. The waitress spoke perfect English so we had a chance to discuss each plate and its ingredients. I would have missed so much about this restaurant – its creativity, its use of locally sourced ingredients had I not chatted her up.
