after the first great experience in "casa Monica" last spring I decided to come back. I ordered a first plate of paccheri with sea foods and tomatoes, they were delicius and most important made with very fresh ingredients (as usually in casa monica). What I like about this place is not only the great food and fresh ingredients but also the slow food mood (they underline that some plates require more than 10 minutes to be cooked, so you really know everything is made freshly), the casual atmosphere of the place and also the little appetizer whit a glass of prosecco they give you as soon as you reach the table..
I had another great time in Casa Monica and I will come back soon.

My wife and I spent three months in Bologna and enjoyed several dinners at Casa Monica. The restaurant is delightfully casual, open and modern with contemporary art hanging throughout. The cuisine is sophisticated, with a focus on fresh ingredients and light preparations. It was a very nice change of pace from traditional Bolognese cuisine, which though wonderful, consists mainly of heavy filled-pastas and roasted meats. At Monica's were had, for example, wonderful ceviche as well as grilled swordfish. However, it is not a seafood restaurant and we had excellent meat dishes as well. Monica herself is the chef and as the website indicates she is professionally trained and recognized. The whole family helps out in the front of the restaurant and we found them lovely hosts. The crowd is heavily local and young as the restaurant is at the outskirt of the main tourist district. However, it is walkable from the Piazza Maggiore, or a short cab ride.

We had a lovely dinner here on a (too short!) one night stay in Bologna. The food is not specifically Bolognese, but fresh and delicious nevertheless. We noticed a really warm and cosy atmosphere as the restaurant filled with young families and couples.

The man at the hotel said go past the pizzaria and look for a building that looks like a garage - that's casa Monica.
Yes it looks like a garage and has a row of tables lined up outside between the building and a fence separating it from a children's play area. Whe we arrived we were the only ones there - but it was early - 8pm. By 9 every table was full and just about all locals and from the greetings with the staff they were locals.
A great meal. You are charged Eur2.90 for bread, a glass of sparking white wine and some tapenade.
For entree my wife had a dish comprising smoked duck breast, fennel and figs - delishious - whilst I had gazpatcio - great. We then followed with a chicken dish that owed much to India and a great steak and potato dish - the steak, seared, but still red, juicy and full of flavour inside served with a fine dry white recommended by the owner (Eur 18.90).
The meal was finished off with delightful desserts.
A menu that is different for much of Europe in it's adventureness showing confidence in the chef's ability that is well bourn out.
Casa Monica is a must when you visit Bologna - In fact visit Bologna to eat at Casa Monica.

You can tell this restaurant - based in an old garage - is good because we walked past it on a Saturday night and it was heaving, filled with people all clearly having a great time. We were staying round the corner (the excellent hotel Re Enzo) and dropped by on a Monday when it was much quieter and didn't need to book. The food was excellent - as other people have said it's Italian food with a twist. If you don't speak any Italian then the menu will be a challenge but the staff try hard. Service was good, wine priced fairly - what more can I say. When in Bologna make a point of eating here - if you can get a table.
