“A fair 3 start city centre hotel”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

I was booked into the Donatella as I was a late addition to the business trip. The rest of the party stayed elsewhere. I found the Donatella basic but friendly - they didn't laugh too much at my Italian and they were helpful.

The room was clean, and being at the rear of the hotel was quiet, but with no view. However, views from hotel rooms are not an issue when you only use the room to sleep in.

Breakfast was a typical 3 star selection.

No complaints here, but I think I might book a more upmarket hotel next time around.

I recommend this hotel for business travelers, as it is in such a fantastic location and the staff is very helpful and friendly. But do not expect atmosphere or luxury in any way. The rooms are very basic, and my twin-sized bed was acceptable, but not hugely comfortable.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the back (not facing Via di Independenzia), which will be quieter.

We stayyed for 2 nights at hotel Donatello with our 2 small kids, one 5 and other 3 years old and it was like a nightmare; smallest room in the world. I stayed in lots of hotels of Italy with my kids and I always booked triple room but at Donatello there was no place to move, to put your lagage, anything... You can only sleep, thats all. If you are single maybe it is ok but even single rooms of hotels are bigger then triple rooms of Donatello. You pay 120€/day for a triple room but you get NOTHING. Absolutely to stay away...

I booked my reservation at least 2 months in advance. Wow, Very expensive, but I guess that's what it is when you have a nice location and are in San Francisco when an event like ORACLE is in town.
Before our trip, I was phoned at home about attending a sales pitch for other properties by Shell Vacactions. I said no. Then when we got there, the very nice concierge tried to get us to sign up
AGAIN. Yikes. I thought that was a bit pushy.
Let's talk about the pillows--if you like dense foam you're in great shape. I don't and called the desk to ask if they had different pillows. I was told no. Then when I mentioned it at check-out the hosts were shocked to find out that I was not accomodated, as they DO have feather pillows.
I won't stay there again. Oh well.

The best thing about this hotel is its staff, friendly helper.
The hotel is conveniently located near the station, 15 minute walk, and not far from the center and the surrounding area there are good restaurants, bars etc.
The hotel itself however is a bad evaluation, the 3 stars are excessive. The rooms are very basic, narrow bathrooms, the soundproofing exist both outside (noise of cars, buses) and interior (you can hear everything from the nearby habiatciones). Oh and the price is relatively expensive for those installations calling for modernization.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms that do not give the street

Positive is that it's located not very far from Bologna Centrale station. Fairly easy to find, if you have a map. A short walk away are the Two towers and the Neptune Fountain. Lots of trattorias, cafes and bars around so you don't have to go very far in search of food!! The hotel itself is all right if you're staying for a night or two. My single was very tiny and the bathroom even tinier. There is a computer with internet available for guests to use in the lobby. Wi-fi available but has to be paid for. The staff were cordial. Fairly good buffet breakfast. Great cappuccino!! Got a fair deal on price over the internet.

Hotel Donatello was easy to find from the train station and is centrally located to everywhere you want to go in Bologna. The rate was very reasonable and the included breakfast was decent.
Unfortunately the a/c broke the first night and made for an unbearable sleepless night. Additionally, the person/people in the room above us sounded like they were moving furniture in high heels at 7am each morning. I have no idea what was going on but regardless, it was very noisy. Smoking is allowed in this hotel which, for a non-smoker is gross. Our concern about the a/c was addressed by the very helpful front desk manager and we were assured several times that it would be operating the next night, which thankfully it was. The service at the front desk was great but I'm not sure that makes up for the other downfalls at Hotel Donatello. I would recommend this hotel as a value-priced option for travellers on a budget but I would tell them to not expect the best night's sleep.
