Just off all the major highways, and close to a station (with free parking) to get to Bologna, this comfortable villa is a relaxing hideaway. The accommodation is well equipped, inside and out, with spacious bedrooms and ample seating areas. The pool area, up a grassy slope, gets the full sun, and has lovely views of the surrounding countryside. As well as spending time at the villa, we were easily able to reach Parma, Modena, Ravenna and Bologna (all amazing locations), as well as some smaller, more local attractions such as the Chestnut Museum in Zocca. Vittore gave us a warm welcome and even drove us round the local area so we could find our feet on day 1.
We (two adults and three kids aged 13, 13 and 11) stayed at Villa Bolsenda in early August and had a fantastic time. The inside of the villa is clean, spacious, well-appointed and has everything you need (including mosquito sprays, shampoos, conditioners, pool towels, hand washes, dishwasher tablets, etc etc etc). It is also an extremely authentic Italian house and is warm and inviting. As an earlier reviewer said, the pictures really don’t do the villa justice.
The grounds of the villa are sizable, with lots of lovely plants and bamboos. The pool is a very good size and comes equipped with inflatables. Refreshingly, the pool had a minimal amount of chemicals, which was great as our kids are affected by chlorine. The garden overlooks hills and lovely surrounding countryside.
The villa is easy to get to, being fairly close to motorways and around 20 minutes’ drive from the airport. It is also a short drive to a train station that will take you to Bologna (15 minutes on the train). However, despite the closeness to these networks, it feels rural and is not on the flight path. You certainly don’t hear traffic noise or airplanes.
We did several day trips from the Villa, including to Bologna, which is a MUST see, beautiful city and very easy to get to on the train. We also visited Ferrara (where there is a castle), as well as the Ferrari and Lamborghini museums. I would recommend both. But the Ferrari museum is definitely the better of the two and well worth a visit if you have any interest in cars. It is also an easy drive from the museum to Modena, which is pretty. We also did several drives up into the beautiful Appenine hills just above the villa. The views are absolutely amazing and there are a few very nice looking restaurants within a fairly short drive into the hills. It was very hot when we visited (in the middle of a heatwave), so we opted to stay in the villa and at the pool rather than heading further afield to Florence and Venice – next time! Florence is only 37 minutes on the train from Bologna.
Finally, I couldn’t write a review of the Villa without mentioning the delightful owners who live next door. Vittorio and Rosa Maria were extremely welcoming and friendly. On the first day, Vittorio drove me to nearby locations such as the supermarket, train station, and nearby restaurants so that it was more straightforward to navigate around. We were also greeted in the kitchen by a homemade cake (which my son said was the nicest cake he has had), some fruit in the fridge (presumably from the garden) and a couple of bottles of wine. Vittorio was on hand if we needed anything, but without being in any way intrusive. On our penultimate day at the villa there was a horrendous crash on the motorway leading to the airport, meaning that many of the routes were closed. Vittorio rang the police to find the best route through and led us to the airport along back roads so that we didn’t have any problems catching our flights. Thank you Vittorio! You are a true ambassador for Italy.
We look forward to booking on our next trip to Villa Bolsenda!
We had a wonderful stay at Villa Bolsenda. The villa was quiet, very comfortable and spacious. Our hosts were very friendly indeed and really made us feel welcome. The villa is close to Bologna and the motorway, which was convenient for making several day trips. We had a nice swim every day in the swimming pool. We had a wonderful stay in the villa and hope to visit again.
Vittorio and Rosa Maria are the perfect hosts, nothing is too much trouble and they are on hand to sort any problems you may have. Beautiful airy rooms with cooling fans even in the 38 C temps the house was cool and sleeping was easy. The lounge area is large with 5 comfortable sofa's , a large verandah with a long table for lovely family evenings, be aware there are mosquitoes in the area these are controlled in the house and you do need to light the coils on the verandah. The large garden has many interesting plants particularly a collection of bamboos and some wonderful trees.
We spent many evenings watching the pipistrel bats swooping across the sky in the dusk.
Vittorio will recommend and book many excellent local restaurants for you not to be missed are the local pizzeria El Delfino and the Golden Spider restaurant. Bologna is an easy train ride away and the train station is next to a great supermarket.
As my son mentioned in an earlier review we had an issue with one of our dogs and Vittoria contacted, took us to and spoke to the Vet for us, he also took to of our sons to the airport for their flight home, proving he is an exemplery host.
I reccomend Villa Bolsenda very highly.
The villa is a great size and enough room for 6/7 people. The local area is beautiful if you go the right area, The host's are amazing and make the villa special nothing is to much want a dinner table they will recommend and book. We had a issue with one of dogs becoming unwell they booked a vet and drove us to the appointment and came in to translate to english. Nothing is to much of ask whatever you need they will be on hand. We even got a lesson of how to make fresh pasta and sources which i would highly recommend asking to see if you can do it while you stay.
Vittorio and his wife Maria, made us feel very welcome and had stocked the fridge with some essentials in preparation of our arrival, as well as homemade baking...certainly well appreciated by our group of four. Vittorio took us on a tour of the area so we could become a bit familiar, especially the train station where we could catch the train to Bologna. Vittorio was most helpful with making reservations for us at various restaurants, which helped a lot. There was plenty of hot water for our showers as well. The patio outside and access to a barbecue was also most welcome.
Bolsenda Villa was a great place to stay! We travelled with our kids and the house owners (Vittorio) and his wife prepared everything with detail for us to feel like at home. (homemade cake, wine, warm house, cribs and sheets for the kids, even toys! )
The house is the perfect get away place. We went during winter time so we couldn’t use much the outside areas but we had long nights by the fireplace enjoying a good wine a reading some of the hundreds of interesting books that Vittorio has in the house.
There are good restaurants around like in a 5 or 10 min car drive and Vittorio had all the menus ready in English for us!
All I can say is that if we go back to Bolonia we will for sure stay there again!
