The cleanliness in the public areas of the hotel was poor. The breakfast room needs to be improved, it was situated in cellar and the guests have to go through stores to find it.Receptionist had to make breakfast service and reception

When we were first shown our room we did a bit of a double take as it was very very orange. But once we had recovered from the colour shock, we were quite impressed with the size of the room and the bathroom. Very comfortable and clean.

The windows open out onto the canal which is quite picturesque and worth a photograph.

The best feature of this hotel is it's location which is very convenient for the station and the old city. Yes, there is a sex shop next store, but it is not too sleazy and to be honest, my friend and I even had a little browse in there. Inside it was light and bright and there were no men with macs lurking behind the displays.

The receptionist was tremendously helpful with side requests, and spoke excellent English.

While it wasn't the most luxurious hotel I have ever stayed in, it was absolutely fine, and considering the price of other hotels in the area, very good value for money.

while the location is near the city center, the sex shop next door is not a plus. Otherwise the hotel was clean and roomy and the staff very friendly.

Don't let the fact that there's an adult shop next door the hotel put you off!! The location is terrific just up the street from the main square and a minute walk from the nearest bar, restaurant and cafe. Nice big room with big bed and really hot water in the shower. Breakfast was just fine to set you p for the day. Buy a map and take a phrase book cos Bologna is very Italian and there's not a lot of English spoken or wriitten - even in the Irish bars!!

After doing many searches for hotels in Bologna, we decided to book at ZanHotel's Il Canale because we felt it was a good value for our spending price point. We were very pleased during our stay.

First, the location was near perfect for us. We were very close to the Aero Bus line as well as the activities we had planned. It is centrally located. Sure there is an adult toy store next door, but it was like any other business nearby. We detected no "red light" activity from it. Second, the room was clean with a nice bathroom. The windows opened fully to reveal a pleasant, cool night air. Yes, there was a little noise at night once in awhile, but come on people this is a metropolitan ITALIAN city. Hint: Italian cities, like other world cities, can be a little noisy at times. However, we slept peacefully practically the whole time we were there. The quality of the bed was average--perhaps a bit firm. The pillows could've been fluffier, but certainly not unbearable. I have slept on harder beds, though.

The breakfast was good. People have complained about the quality of the coffee. Agreed, it is not made by a barista ready to take your order. Again, this is a THREE star hotel with three star coffee; different brews made by a machine. However, it was a very nice spread by Italian breakfast standards. We enjoyed the pastries, meat, cheeses, and yogurt. Really, there was something for everyone--cereal, fruit, juices, etc. Again people, this is a THREE star hotel. It's really like the Italian version of a Hampton Inn.

The walls were paper thin. The building is probably very, very old. It didn't bother us, though. as our neighbors next door were quiet by 23:00.

We checked in much later than anticipated due to a long delay, When I called the front desk while at the airport in Paris, I received a good reassurance that our room would still be waiting for us. We checked in with no problem. I speak a litle Italian, and everyone there speaks some English to very adequate English. Any request was graciously fulfilled. Good service from everyone.

No problems with bugs or bug bites. However, one night when we arrived back from a long day out, there were some little bugs on our bedspread that had flown in from the trees due to our windows being fully opened. Someone from the front desk promptly came up and took care of the problem. The complaint about the t.v. broadcasting only Italian stations was silly. Perhaps they didn't realize where they were located--Italy. The history of the canal was interesting, and we enjoyed the charm of it nearby. All and all we had a very pleasant stay. Clean, comfortable room with a nice breakfast.

The Il Canale is very conveniently located mid-way between the train station and the Piazza Maggiore and within easy walking distance of both. Public transport is excellent in Italy and the bus stop is just a few metres from the hotel in Via Dell'Indipendenza. The BLQ Aerobus stops here every 20 minutes. However, the Canale is down a side alley right next door to the already well documented Erotic Boutique which didn't bother us, in fact it was quite entertaining! The proximity to the hidden canal is hardly a selling point; it was a dull grey stretch of water that I could easily blame for the insect bites I suffered.

Our room was small and very orange with just enough room to move around the extremely hard bed. At this time of year the temperatures were a very pleasant 24 - 26 degrees and we would have liked to have kept the windows open but we were right above the small open (sky-well) area and there were many occasions when we had to close the windows because of the noise and smoke. On the plus side the room was made up with fresh linen and towels every day (Tip: put out the 'make up my room' sign). However, the carpets throughout the hotel were dirty. Towards the end of our stay an attempt was made to clean the carpets in the foyer and lift (elevator) but this only resulted in the colour running!

Breakfast was about average for Italy but we would have liked to have the option of proper, rather than machine-made, coffee.

On most days there was only one member of staff on duty in the mornings. Although she was very helpful she had to keep the front door locked and had to be found any time anyone wanted to go in or out.

The TV was a very small, old CRT model and would only receive about seven channels, all of which were in Italian.

I guess that you get what you pay for, so next time we'll be looking for something a little more expensive!

We stayed here from dec 11th to dec 13th. It was great. Ask for room number 10. It has a fine bed. The most special feature is the view from the bathroom and the small room to the opposite. If we visit Bologna again we definitely will stay in Room nr. 10 at IL Canale !
