“Great location, nice staff, plentiful breakfast but...”
Reviewed April 17, 2011

I travel a lot but it was my first trip to Italy and Bologna. I was utterly surprised by the room - for €115 per night it was poor value for money: the room was small, there was PVC siding on the ceiling, the remote control, the phone and hotel toiletries were covered in dust. Nevertheless, the hotel staff was helpful and nice, the "Italian style" breakfast was tasty and the roof terrace offered magnificient views. My room also had a great balcony.

Located just a few metres from the famous towers, this hotel has excellent location with bars, restaurants, museums and shops easy accessible by foot.

Breakfast is good with a small selection of cold cuts, juices and pastries amongst others. Receptionist were helpfull.

Rooms are well sized and the beds confortable. At night, since it's in the centre, there can be some noise, many students tend to gather in from of the hotel, but that was expected since it's the university area. The hotel also offers free wi-fi with good connection.

If you're staying in Bologna and want to visit the city, I do recommend this hotel.

Was very impressed with the large, comfortable room on arrival. Nice big bed, spacious room and well-equipped en suite. The breakfast was great. Staff were friendly and helpful. Not being an Italian speaker was no obstacle at all. Only complaint was about the noise. Because the hotel overlooks a picturesque square on a street with plenty of bars and restaurants, there were a lot of people passing by talking loudly right into the small hours. Definitely NOt for the light sleeper!

The hotel is sort of okay overall if you don't have high expectations but does not deserve to be a four star or even three star. Extremely noisy, paper walls and tile floors (bring your own slippers by the way, tiles are super cold) are designed to amplify any noise like a moving chair or even somebody snoring in the next room. The staff does not mention that internet is available at check-in, at breakfast you have to ask for coffee before it is offered (I saw a number of people not getting a cup of morning cappuccino because they did not know you could ask for it), the quality of breakfast items like cheese and hams is really bad, maybe the cheapest items one can find in Bologna, and it is really hard to find bad ham in Bologna. But worst of all, two out of the seven night we stayed the wake up call never materialized, which would be okay if one of the nights was not a 6:30 a.m. flight. I accidentally woke up 30 minutes before reserved taxi was supposed to arrive and we only managed to get ready in extreme rush. If I didn't check out the night before, we would have probably missed our plane. The hotel has the appearance of a nice hotel on paper, but it is the worst hotel I stayed in anywhere in Italy (and that's a lot of hotels), only above hostels.

Well done to the San Donato! We flew in for the weekend to explore Bologna and to enjoy a touch of the Italian lifestyle and the San Donato was the perfect base. The room was large and clean; the shower was grand and the toiletries smelt good; afternoon tea in the bar was just what we needed and the buffet breakfast set us up for the day. There is also a lovely roof terrace - it was too chilly for us to enjoy it but would be great in the spring/summer.
We loved Bologna - so much to see - such a great place for wandering and following the alleyways. Happening upon a chocolate festival also added to our happiness!
We definitely intend to go back to Bologna and will certainly choose the San Donato for our return visit.

I agree with other reviewers - the key feature is its excellent location - 10 minutes on foot gets you to almost everywhere travellers want to visit. It has no restaurant, but there are so many cafes, bars, gelateria and restaurants around - with some bars and cafes on the doorstep. Buffet breakfast is the usual - high standard and plentiful, if unchanging. Very helpful front desk staff. Rooms are adequate (maybe small to US travellers), but clean and well equipped - ask and they will supply free tea and coffee making facilities to the room as well as what is available during the day in the bar. Free wifi in the bar area. We found the rooms very quiet - but in November we kept the window closed - maybe different in the summer! Very close to the University, so a few noisy students. For anyone wanting a good standard but basic (by 4 star standards) hotel right in the historic town, this place is hard to fault. But if you want all the bells and whistles, maybe not.

It's really good value for the price and the location although the rooms are nothing special. Staying at this hotel puts you in the heart of the city, close to the two towers and with some really good coffee shops around. Check out Cafe Zamboni just down the road as well as the excellent gellateria further along.
