We booked 12 nights here as a base to use trains from Bologna to visit parts of Italy within a 2-3 hour journey time and from start to finish we can honestly say we were exremely well treated.

This really should be two separate reviews for while we were accommodated in the country house we used its sister property - the Recency - as our chill out base when we weren't travelling around.

A bit of clarity might help regarding the two properties, the country house we learned has been open for 15 years while the Regency is apparently 5 years in operation, the distance from reception to reception is approx 100 metres, no big deal.

When the country house states that its guests have full use of the Regency's facilities that is exactly what is available, from the beautiful outdoor pool to the indoor games room and restaurant and bar to the fitness centre.

I orignally had a problem with a credit card as a room reservation and when contacted by Michaela from the country house she was absolutely terrific in helping me get that sorted out , and this was some months ago before we had even arrived!

All of the reception staff in the country house were extremely helpful and friendly, queries were answered with a smile.

Upon our arrival Michaela was on duty and checked us in with a minimum of fuss and true to her earlier word she had allocated us a great room which was spotlessly clean and kept that way for the entire duration of our stay.

The country house is located on a corner of via San Donato (a dual caarriageway) and the via d'ell Pilastro (a small country road), the hotel actually consists of three separate houses with varying amounts of rooms in each, the reception house has I believe just five rooms, the one opposite (where we stayed) has approx 16 rooms and the smallest approx six.

So depending on which one you are allocated to you may not have read any reviews for that particular house, however all of the houses appear to have been refurbished and certainly where we were located had been very modernised without losing its older house charm.

The renovations include high spec bathroom, in room firdge, actual satellite flat screen tv and where some renovated properties can become a disaster to get to grips with the new gadgetry this house was simplicity itself to get to know how to work the bits and pieces.

The bathroom was a shower only and no bath, the water temperature and pressure were both first rate and simple to operate, towels were supplied daily and the room itself was always serviced and cleaned by 11.00am each day.

We did use the country house's small bar for an evening drink on a number of occasions but mainly we used the bigger bar over in the Regency where we were well looked after by Giovanni and his staff including Paolo and Marco at the Beach Cafe bar beside the outdoor pool.

Breakfast was the normal fare of cold meats, cheeses, pastries etc and these were constantly replenished, all of a high standard and the breakfast area was spotlessly clean also.

For anyone with a car these properties are a doddle to locate, the via San Donato seems to be a main trunk road in and out of Bologna and is at the slip road on and off the Autostrada.

For people without a car the properties are served by a number of bus routes in and out of Bologna city centre so a little detail might help here.

Any bus from Bologna using the via San Donato will take you to the country house, if you arrive from the airport on the bus to the Stazione Centrale you simply cross to the oposite side of the road and take the number 35 from outside the Mercure Hotel but be careful that route only runs up to 8.00pm on weekdays, up to 2.00pm on Saturday and has no service on Sundays.

Alternatively get off the airport bus as it turns onto the via d'ell Indipendenza (at the corner with McDonalds on the Piaza Maggiore) and from that same stop pick up the number 20 bus to the via San Donato. That number bus operates 7 days a week and up to 1.00am in the morning.

Right outside the country house you can pick up the number 35 which will take you in about 5 minutes to the Meraville Shopping Cantre which has a range of shopping outlets.

There is free wifi in both properties and free use of cpomputers with that, overall we were very impressed with both the properties.

I payed near 1400 euros for 4 nights at this hotel and i received a room at downfloor, i can say basement. The room was very very small, with window bars, during the night it was very cold (during the day too but we had luck with sunny days). It wasn't too clean and from our room we could hear every door, every person that was entering in the building, persons talking and even people taking shower. It's very far away from the city center and if you are going for exhibitions at Bologna Fiera, you can't walk, you have to take a bus, bus no 35.
And they say they have free WIFI but it doesn't work

I have nothing but good things to say about this hotel in regards to location, cleanliness, style and reception staff, but in regards to security be very very careful.
The hotel itself is situated just on the outskirts of the city, next to the main ring road (rooms are sound proof) meaning connections are good. It is about a 5 minute drive from Bologna centre and 15-20 minutes from the airport.
On arrival our room the reception staff were friendly and informative and advised that our room was not ready, but offered us a free drink at the bar, where we waited 10 minutes while they finished off our room for us. The room was exactly like pictured...a spacious contempory junior suite. The safe we found a bit awkward to use, but eventually managed to store our travel documents in it. One day during our stay I left by a very expensive diamond and pearl bracelet out on the bedside table. When we came back to the room later, it had been cleaned and the bracelet had gone!!! This you do not expect to happen anywhere, as on numerous occasions I have left things in hotels and they have not been touched!! I reported this to recpetion but heard nothing back. This put a real downer on the holiday stay :(
Otherwise I recommend eating at the onsite restaurant as the food and service was brilliant.
I would not however stay in this hotel or recommend it to friends and family due to my bracelet being stolen.....regardless of how nice, central and friendly people were.....
Be warned.....

Only a 10 minute bus ride to the center of Bologna and it feels like you are staying in the country. Lovely rooms although a bit dark but as it was so hot this was fine to keep sun out.
Our room was right by the busy road and road noise was constant but closing the window and putting on aircon solved the problem. Otherwise this is a lovely hotel, very good staff,
excellent standard of refurb and the added bonus of being able to use the restaurant and pool of the sister hotel 200 yards away. Poolside BBQ at the Savoia Regency was excellent and the pool and poolside staff at the bar very professional. There is also a
huge public park next door to hotel ideal for walk after great breakfast. This is very good
hotel and an ideal place for exploring Bologna and the surrounding area and is 5 minutes from the main motorways so hence the road noise but that is the only negative.

We stayed 3 nights at the Savoia and really liked it. The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was spotless and comfortable. Breakfast was lovely, fresh and lots of choice. The gardens were really nice and made it feel like you were in the countryside . It was about a 10 to 15 min drive to city centre. We ate
dinner at the Savoia Regency(sister hotel) which was 3 mins walk and had some of the best meals we have ever eaten in Italy . There's also a park at the back of the hotel . We used the gym and swimming pool at the Regency hotel as well. I would definetly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for good service and good value.

This hotel is a gem in a busy city - easy access to town center and highway - yet when pull into the gated entry, feel like you're away from it all. It has partnership with larger Savoia hotel across a pedestrian street where there is great pool and fitness center - while the country house itself maintains great charm. The on-site restaurant had excellent bolognese cuisine!!
