Owner description: The colossal towers were built by Bologna's important families in the 12th century.

The entrance to the tower is dark, tight and unwelcoming. We had to walk several steps up before we came to the ticket booth where we paid €6 for 2 tickets to continue our ascent up its 498 steps to the top.Once we were inside the tower it was bright, airy and spacious as it was well-lit,had ventilation holes on its walls and the staircase followed very closely to the perimetre of the tower and thus wasn't narrow and claustrophobic. It wasn't a spiral staircase but more of a square as the staircase hugged the walls of the tower as it made its ascent. The wooden steps were evenly spaced and the gradient gentle with landings at every corner for you to take a breather. My husband and I enjoyed our climb up as we took our time and enjoyed the view(looking through the ventilation holes and windows)as we made our way up.Two flights before the summit, the steps became narrower and the incline steeper. We watched our footing and made it to the top and were rewarded with stunning views of the city and the Apennines. The view was certainly worth the climb. For at least 15 minutes we had the top of the tower all to ourselves till a couple joined us.It was surreal!!

The leaning smaller tower and the highrise thin bigger brother have a very distinct view. They form a landmark to the very lively student district.
The high tower can be visited if your dare a 500 steps stairs.

The higher tower is really extraordinary. The short is so tilted that, were it higer, it would not have survived. You cannot leave Bologna if you haven't seen them!

We made the treck up the wooden stair to the top and loved the experience, the history and the climb. How wonderful that small architectural spots like this are preserved and shared.

Yes, it's a real hike to the top of this 13th century symbol of beautiful Bologna, but the view is absolutely worth the effort. The day I was there was clear as a bell, and the vista of the old city and surrounding countryside was breathtaking.
