Owner description: The colossal towers were built by Bologna's important families in the 12th century.

Stand on the street opposite and look up at these amazing two amazing leaning towers which are the symbol of Bologna. Asinelli is open but my knees wouldn't allow me to climb the 500 odd steps. If I was younger, I would go step by step up the staircase, which is supposed to be made of wood. Just to stand and angle the camera at these ancient towers admiring the tilt.

IN the 12th century, the inhabitants of Bologna, for no apparent reason, started building towers. These are the only two left, and one has had to be halfed in height, due to a pronounced lean to one side. The view from the top is fantastic, right across the city.I was there in winter,so there was some snow on the rooftops, and on the distant mountains.Be aware that the staircase goes around the inside of the wall, with a hollow centre,no good if you don't like heights...like me.Still well worth the trip. These towers are mentioned in some detail in John Grisham's book,The Broker, which is why I went to see them.

Really nice atmosphere, though quiet stressful to come up because of the high number of persons who were inside, small stairs. But beautiful atmosphere on the top, with good weather

Gives a good impression of how the city looked like in former times. Must have been amazing, all these towers!
