“Lovely spiritual place”
Reviewed October 7, 2012

My husband thought this basilica could turn him religious - it is a wonderful space, with a beautiful aura. We attended a drop in concert with two co-ordinated choirs singing psalms - a lovely experience.

“Great church”
Reviewed October 7, 2012

Really high church, with many thing to see.. Wall painting, little chapels on the sides, some technological stuff, like clocks and sundiaries. I also enjoyed the terrace view. You pay 3euro and climb 15 floors on foot, but the view makes it worth it!

“A fascinating and massive church”
Reviewed August 23, 2012

We visited San Petronio several times during our week in Bologna. It is located on the Piazza Maggiore, the crossroads of downtown Bologna. First of all, it is massive. It was intended to be a basilica larger than St. Peter's in Rome. When the pope heard about this, he intervened and gave land near the church to the University of Bologna effectively stopping this huge place from rivaling St. Peter's in size. Once inside, you will be amazed at its size. Walk up the center aisle to the main sanctuary and look closely at the incredible detail. Then take time to explore the many side altars, many of which are difficult to see unless you pay the small fee to turn on the lighting. (You have to view many of these side altars through tall gates). Many had unusual decorations, paintings, and sculpture. One of the most captivating and bizarre captures Dante's Inferno. Definitely spend the .50 Euro to turn on the lights on this chapel/altar! And buy the postcards available at the back of the church because your friends back home will not believe your description of it. San Petronio also houses a number of scientific things: ancient clocks that still work; the largest sundial in the world on a Meridian line (you will actually walk across this on the left side of the church). Take your time to marvel at this incredible piece of architecture. And definitely take time to walk around the outside to admire the brick work. When we visited, the front of the basilica was undergoing major restoration. At the cost of several Euros visitors can go up the separate (side) entrance for a view of Bologna. This basilica is definitely worth a visit.
