Bologna is also an excellent base for visiting Ferrara (45 km), Modena (40 km), Parma (95 km), Ravenna (75 km), Reggio Emilia (65 km), Rimini (112 km) and Florence (80 km).
Very nice place, excelent location and no problems at all.

We stayed there only 3 nights and none of us complained about anything serious. It is a very simple and cheap hostel without any luxuries. The rooms were clean and furnished with 3 beds, 3 closets, a table and couple of chairs. Earlier we've read here that the breakfasts are a joke in this hostel but it turned out they're not that bad. It's a small "all-you-can-eat" buffet where you can choose from bread, chocolate butter, couple of different fruit jellies, milk, cereal, coffe, tea, juice. You can really fill up on those for few hours before lunch time. One thing that might be an inconvenience for some people is the distance from Bologna city center, but this wasn't a surprise for us - we knew very well where we'll be staying. It takes only 10-15 minutes by bus to reach the center and you can buy tickets at the front desk. To sum it up - I wouldn't hesitate to book this hostel next time I plan a trip to Bologna.

This place is very inconveniently located. It's an hour long walk from the main center of the city.

The rooms are huge, though, with massive lockers that can actually fit around 3 short people inside.

It also comes with free wifi and breakfast. The bathrooms are down the hall and big but you had to press a button to get water from the shower.

OK, those were the nice things I had to say.

Here are the bad:

The place is so stupid. So, upon check in, they tell us we need to be out of the room from 10 AM to 2 PM for cleaning. We thought, oh they just want us out of the room...ok well that's fine.

Well, a friend was getting in around 11:30 AM to Bologna, so we had to wait at the hostel to check him in. We found out that the hostel actually kicks EVERYONE out at 10 AM and LOCKS all the doors...they even set up alarms for some doors. I have never heard of a hostel or a hotel that empties the entire building just so they can clean. It's not like they're gassing the place for termites...they're cleaning toilets and emptying trash. Come on...so ridiculous!

I had to pee like a crazy racehorse, and the lady screamed at me for trying to get into the building. Seriously? Lunatics! The maids even left at around 1:30 PM and the receptionist still wouldn't open the doors.

Also, my friend asked the lady at the front desk if she had change, and before he could finish his sentence, she screamed, "NO!!!!" Later on, she gave us change when we checked our friend in.

Also, they told us we couldn't do laundry until 8 PM because of construction. First, we stayed there 3 nights and never once saw any type of construction or construction workers...or even debris from a construction site. Also, the laundry room is located outside and in the back of the hostel...far away from any construction (if it existed).

My friend was able to get his laundry out of the room before the bolted the entire building shut. So he did laundry while we waited outside with no problems. Why we had to wait till 8PM is beyond me.

I will say that Olivier, one of the receptionists, was nice. We accidentally booked the place for July instead of June, but he was quick to help us out. Other than that, the staff is nuts!

From the train station, you can easily reach the hostel by bus, getting out at the bus stop "San Sisto". The hostel is quite animated and the welcoming is very friendly. You can eat dishes or meals until 11pm and the Internet room, although with a quite slow connexion, is free of charge.Yet, dormitories look like hospital rooms, the bathroom has cold water and showers are quite dirty. Breakfast is very average, don't either expect to eat too much ! In two words, an average hostel for worldwide travelers.

I've been there for one night only (Nov 2009). To get there it's not difficult (there is a direct bus line from the railway station, could only go more frequently - btw. consider to buy a daily ticket, the so called giornalero, it's rather cheap and you will need it if you want to visit the centre of the city, and I suppose you do :D), but takes a lot of time, as the hostel is located in rather distant suburbs of Bologna. Anyway, according to my knowledge it's one of the Bologna's two options in the low-budget class, both equally distant from the centre. The hostel is open round the clock (24 h/7days), and when you find another information in some editions of Lonely Planet, just don't worry, they are wrong here.
The building is modern, and generally rather clean (although my room could have been better with this!) and quiet (here the suburbs are a plus!). There is an internet room with 3 computers (usage paid extra).
What I was really amazed with there - was the very friendly and helpful behaviour of the staff, that really was on a level I rarely could meet in my many European journeys. Even when I made them some problems (key left by mistake in the room; being slightly late for breakfast) they treated me very gentle and solved everything. Grazie, Chiara e tutti voi. I will miss our multilingual smalltalks ;-)

I stayed at this hostel for 4 nights in January 2004. It is rather basic and situated in a modern building in a suburban area that exceedingly lacks any charm, but it is not expensive and the staff is friendly. However the breakfast is ridiculous, a rule of one bread per person was strictly managed, even though there was plenty of it.
Getting there by bus can be a bit difficult in the sense that the relevant bus lines - and therefore the stops - change according to the time and the day, but services do exist. Line 21 is the most frequent from the station. Walking all the way to the city centre takes an hour and is not recommendable. Bologna itself is interesting and worth a few days spent there. Other tight-budget options do apparently not exist.
