“Great Place!”
Reviewed August 1, 2014

We returned to San Mamolo on our recent trip to Italy and were pleased to find it as wonderful as the last time! Friendly staff, comfortable, clean rooms and great breakfast. They have new memory foam pillows which I was a bit unsure of, but were great! One of those places you wish you could return to for the night no matter where in Italy you were visiting. We look forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: If you like to sleep in, ask to stay on the second floor and/or away from the breakfast area. Peopl...

This hotel has great character, lovely staff, delicious breakfast, large quiet rooms and a super location that is a 10 minute walk to the city center. Caring, personable staff all spoke English and had great recommendations of things to do and places to eat. Will be back!!

We stayed for two nights at the Hotel Porta San Mamolo, being our first time in Bologna. We decided to go for this hotel mainly because of its location, as we were looking for a place near the historic city centre.

The good:

- The hotel is worth the price just for its breakfast. It is served in the courtyard of the hotel and you can choose to sit inside or outside (weather permitting). Besides the beautiful setting, we were served great cappuccinos, fresh pastries and homemade cakes and the staff were very accommodating (despite the place getting quite crowded at peak times).

- Location is very convenient if you want to wander around the city centre. It is a 10 to 15 minute walk to Piazza Maggiore. In case you don't want to use the hotel's parking service there is a parking that charges 12eur for the day stay (or 2eur/hour). Note that the parking is closed between 1am and 7am (but you can still leave your car before 1am and pick it up next morning). The parking is located about 400m away from the hotel on Viale Enrico Panzacchi, close to the intersection with Via Alfonso Rubbiani.

- Staff were very friendly and helpful. They kindly noted us that, if we had entered the car-restricted zone (which we had done when locating the hotel), we should provide them with our car's license plate in order to get the proper waiver from the authorities and thus avoid being fined.

The not-so-good:

- Our room was on the first floor facing the street and was a bit noisy when we opened the window. There was no air conditioning so I imagine it can get very hot in summer.

- It is very difficult to park next to the hotel to load or unload your bags. We thought the parking provided by the hotel was expensive (20eur/day) and not very practical as each time you needed the car you had to ask someone to go and open it for you and help you get the car out as it was very narrow.

In summary, at 140usd/night this hotel is a cozy alternative to visit Bologna's city centre. Price is on the high side for what you get but given that we booked with very little anticipation you can probably get a better deal.

We stayed here one night on our way from Lucca, Italy to Strasbourg, France. It was an expensive taxi ride from the train station but worth every penny as the staff was exceptional. The room was just what we needed, in fact the air conditioner was pretty good although a little noisy at night. The breakfast was excellent and in a beautiful setting surrounded by persimmon trees and many other beautiful plants. The service here was also excellent. While the room itself was not a 5 the staff in every way was!

My wife and I stayed for one night only. We drove a rental car and the sat-nab took us directly to the hotel.
We arranged a car space which was right outside hotel.
Our room was clean and tidy, with private balcony overlooking the garden, which was pleasant place relaxing after a busy day sightseeing.
It is very quiet and good night sleep.
Short walk to town. Staff very friendly and helpful.
We would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Room 204 was nice with balcony.

We recently stayed here for six nights and had a very pleasant time. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. Our room was large and had a nice sized bathroom, we didn't have a great view but otherwise it was very nice. The courtyard is beautiful and lush with plants with plenty of areas to sit and visit or read. The breakfast was adequate and the staff kept it well supplied during the breakfast hours. Being located away from the main part of town this hotel was quiet, which we liked. The walk to town was an easy 10 minute walk. We enjoy walking so didn't mind a little exercise. There are several restaurants close by which were very good. Don't hesitate to ask the staff as they are more than helpful to give suggestions. We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone. It's quaint, quiet and quirky!!

Room Tip: All of the rooms are a little different so if they aren't real busy ask to see several.

When we arrived, earlier than check in time, the front desk staff was very gracious and welcoming. They said that they had two rooms and wanted to show them to us so we could pick. One was ready now and the other we would have to wait a bit. The first was in the main building and was moderate sized on the 1st floor (for US 2nd floor). The other was in a building 25 yards away. (They have expanded the hotel by buying apartments). When we got there the maid was leaving having finished. By European standards this was a very large room. Very pretty AND it had it's own pocket garden. That sold it.

I can't say enough about the staff. When I asked about recommendations for restaurants the woman at the front desk took a map off the pad of maps and started to put dots all over the map with names of restaurants. She drew on the map for locations to shop and the food market. I've stayed in hotels all over the world (25 countries, 6 continents, 45 states), in 5 star hotels and resorts and no one has done a better job - I wish I recalled her name. She really took a genuine personal interest in ensuring that my wife and I really enjoyed our stay.

They had an intern from Turkey who was by her own account attempting to try gelato at every gelateria in Genoa. She told us which was her favorite. We'd read that the gelato in Florence is the best - NO - Genoa wins.

Finally breakfast. The buffet was in a garden setting and was one of the nicest places I've eaten in a hotel anywhere. The food was good too. Great cappuccino, a selection of salumi and cheese, baked goods and fruit.

It was about a 10 minute walk from the Piazza Maggiore. I think they could accommodate a car which a more central location would have problems with.

Room Tip: If you can room 1, an apartment has it's own patio and private garden.
