Reasonable cost. 20 min walk to the city center. Wonderful restaurant down the street. Rooms were clean and a fair size. Had internet issues tho was there to be on vacation. Breakfast was great. Cereals, fruit, coffee and lattes. Eggs, pastries, and juice. Thought Bologna was a nice city yo visit. A bit quiet over Xmas.

Who needs a concierge when the owner seems to be always on property, the front desk and staff knowledgeable and so friendly and everything you could possible need available to you. Location was absolutely perfect. The room large and impeccably clean with every needed amenity and the breakfast fresh and plentiful. You know you found a special place when you see the wonderful manner in which the staff treats their guests and the smiles on the faces of all the guests. Can't say enough great things about the owner who treats all guests like family and makes you feel like it is his pleasure and honor to make sure you love Bologna and his hotel as much as you can tell he does as well. Bravo!!

The hotel is very nice and cosy inside even you do not except a lot from outside it is really awesome inside, especially when I had an opportunity to be there during pre-Christmas period. When you walk in it seems like you have entered a house from a fiery tail with its warm atmosphere and beautifully decorated Christmas tree. I had an opportunity to enjoy a nice breakfast in a type of veranda surrounded by green. Somehow unaccepted but really cosy feeling eating there, even the cat looking from outside the window adds this cosiness.

The Porta San Mamolo is all you want if you look for a small, family run hotel which has all the luxury of a great 3 or 4 star hotel and the warmth and friendliness of small family bed and breakfast. It is located in a small street at the edge of the center. Thus if you want to be right in the middle of it, this is not the place for you, but it does not take you longer than a nice 10 minute walk to be right in the center of town.
Our rooms were spacious, the bathroom spotless, the bed comfortable, the water great, the breakfast wonderful within a nice and beautiful garden. And yes, WIFI is free and works as it should, There is really nothing negative to say about this hotel. I would never want to stay anywhere else in Bologna.

Hotel Porto San Mamolo is a great place to stay in Bologna! It has a great location and the service is very friendly. The owner is actually there, which is great, and he offered us complementary cappuccinos upon arrival. The rooms are basic but have everything you need, and for the price that is what you should expect. The real beauty of this place is it's garden and terrace, which has beautiful flowers and a well. There are private villa-type rooms you can get, which I'm assuming are more expensive, but they are right on this terrace area. The breakfast room is here as well, and is beautiful and bright. Breakfast is served every morning and is very nice. I loved this place, and the town of Bologna itself. I would recommend it to anyone!

Room Tip: Get one of the villas! They are beautiful.

I would have rated this hotel 5* if it had been located closer to the center, and 2* if not for the wonderful people. We stayed here for 9 nights in early November, in 2 rooms. It is an older hotel, very charming, with some quirks. Beds were very comfortable, rooms were clean, breakfast was sumptuous. Heating and airconditioning (yes, it was actually that warm on a couple days) Water pressure is low, but it is low all over Bologna apparently. Staff went out of their way to be helpful without being intrusive. They would make coffee for us at 3 AM in the morning when we woke up, jet-lagged. They did our laundry for us for a nominal charge.
About the location: We were a family of 2 adults and 2 children. Restaurant hours were spotty and unpredictable in early November when we visited; the closest restaurant Al Sangiovese was always full, and it is hard to reserve in advance with kids. So we had to trek to the center of town for dinner which was not fun after day tripping or in cloudy weather. Furthermore, as someone else pointed out the streets were dark and not lit in spots, and some were littered with dog poop so not fun to walk in the dark. It was not always easy to find a taxi stand on the way back from dinner. Note, that this may not be the case during high season when restaurants may be open more frequently and days are longer. We chose Bologna because it was well connected by train, and because we wanted to make day trips in the Emilia Romagna region. This hotel is probably the farthest from the train station of all the historic center hotels, the taxicab to the train station never cost us less than 12 euros. In hindsight we should have either stayed in the historic center closer to Piazza Maggiore, or closer to the train station.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the center courtyard
