We stayed for a week in February 2013 in room 214. We wanted to renew our previous experience of Bologna 30 years ago, and travelled by train to Florence and Ravenna. We expected variable weather and indeed it snowed for 3 days, so it was great to be able to return to this centrally-located warm haven. The room was warm and comfortable and we were able to control the temperature. We don't like the current use of thick duvets in hot hotels so we were very happy with the bed coverings, and slept very well in the quiet room. The bathroom was warm and fluffy white towels replaced every day. We had a small balcony (Unused!) with a view of a tower. All the staff were very pleasant and helpful. The breakfast is a substantial continental buffet as would be expected in Italy.
As has been noted by many other reviewers the location could not be better, in a quiet side street but near the main piazza for shops, museums and buses. The many miles of porticoes helped us to stay fairly comfortable while exploring this beautiful city in the rain and snow and sun.

Boutique hotel in an excellent, central location. The hotel staff is very friendly and accommodating. We stayed in room 208. It was so QUIET and spacious. Our room was extremely clean and beautiful. The cream colored wood moldings and decor gave the room a soft brightness. I do believe a couple of double beds were pushed together to form a king size bed but we were comfortable none the less. We had no problems with our internet connection and I was quite grateful that they do not charge extra for it. The breakfast selection is large. We dined 3 mornings, for the most part it was well attended although there was one day the tables were nearly all used but the staff worked hard to clean them. We had no problems controlling the room temperature. They host an evening happy hour with wine and snacks in the pretty and brightly lit room off of the lobby. We enjoyed our stay and would mostly book with Corona D'Oro or one of the other Art Hotels.

Room Tip: Room 208--very QUIET and spacious

Boutique Hotel, 100 m from Piazza Mazziore of Bologna, coming straight from a past era of luxury and hospitality.
The room was small for the price but nevertheless quite comfortable.
The stuff was friendly and competent (with one exception that almost made us loose our flight)

This hotel has a lot going for it and it really wouldn't take much to make it a great hotel. However, as it is, it just doesn't quite hit the mark.

The best thing about the hotel is definitely the location which is really central. It's in a lovely little side street that's primarily a walking zone as it doesn't allow general traffic - just taxis and the like. Being only a few minutes walk from the centre, meant we could nip back to the hotel every now and then during the day which was just great.

The hotel does have a lovely feel to it when you enter the building and the public area by check in is really pleasant although it hardly ever seemed to be used. It would perhaps have been a good place to have breakfast since they have that in a dark room in the basement which is a bit miserable.

The room itself wasn't bad. There was a very spacious bathroom and the room was a decent size but there was way too much furniture which meant it felt a bit like an obstacle course, and the tv (which was tiny) was in a cupboard at the side of the room which didn't make very comfortable viewing. Not that it mattered much since there was pretty much only Italian tv on offer apart from CNN & BBC News.

The main issues we had were:

Bed:
It was just 2 single beds pushed together - not a proper double - and there was no duvet, just a blanket and a sheet. It may have been clean but psychologically, I always feel the blankets probably haven't been washed for some time which is a bit unpleasant, as is the feel of a blanket when the sheet doesn't quite cover it. In addition, the pillows were pretty crappy so I can't say it was a comfortable bed.

Heating:
Our room was like an oven - not to mention the bathroom which was even worse. We turned the heating down but it didn't seem to make any difference so we had to have the french doors open which was just really cold as we only had a blanket.

Internet:
Terrible internet connection. Not only was it really slow most of the time but it kept dropping out which was annoying as we were also trying to do some work. It's also a slightly archaic system because they print out individual codes for each device that you want to use and although we were staying for 4 nights, they only gave us a code for 3 days and we then had to renew it on the last day which is just annoying and a waste of time.

Toiletries:
I know this might seem petty but there was some pretty crappy shampoo/body wash and no conditioner or body lotion which is just not really acceptable for a 4 star hotel. They would have been better off with these items instead of the "intimate cleanser" pouches they had on offer!

Breakfast:
About half the buffet consisted of sweet pastries, biscuits, cakes etc which I suppose is great if you have a really sweet tooth but for us, it didn't appeal. There was no hot food available except for one day when they had scrambled egg & bacon. I say hot but actually it was stone cold which was frankly disgusting. There was some nice cheese and mortadella but even the sliced bread was a bit stale as it was left uncovered for the entire time. All in all, it was ok but just not anything to write home about... although having said that, the buffet was available till 11am which is a real plus.

I'm not sure whether I'd stay there again....

We have stayed t the hotel since 1987 and have loved this hotel. The rooms are large for European standards and the suites are just beautiful. However, this particular time we did not n joy our stay. First the staff now is mostly not Italian so the graciousness of the Italian staff just is not there anymore. The staff actually speaks better English than Italian. My husband is fluent in Italian because he lived here for awhile. He said their Italian was just pitiful. We never got wash clothes or some towels everyday. We had to call down but just gave up after the second day. The bathrooms are not as clean with dirt in the corners. Not respecting Italian would leave dirt in the corners. We called for our car several times and we had to wait over an hour one time because the garage did not answer. It turns out they have a key to the garage but did not want to go get the car. They finally just gave my husband the key to the garage and he got the car.

When we checked out we had to pay the city tax in cash so be aware of this. Never had we ever had to do this. The staff is sometimes surly. Some are really nice. But all and all we did not think this hotel is up to its normal standard

My G/F and I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in a double deluxe room. We really enjoyed the property. It had the feeling of an "old school" european luxury hotel. The room was good sized with classic decor and furnishings. Great all marble bathroom. Very quiet and comfortable. Large breakfast area with a excellent selection of fruits and baked goods. Friendly and helpful staff. Right in the middle of the pedestrian action and a 5 minute walk to Plaza Maggiore with loads of restaurants, shops and open air markets. Excellent property to stay at when exploring Bologna.

Room Tip: Book a deluxe double room for a roomier experience.

The Corona d'Oro is an excellent hotel. Its location, down a quiet street. Everything is within easy walking distance. Right near the hotel are bars and restaurants and the main square is just a skip away.

You cannot find any fault in this hotel - they think of every detail. The beds are super comfortable, the linens lovely and our room (No. 214) had the largest bathroom we have had in Europe. A marble bathroom with a huge walk-in shower. There was a small terrace looking onto a courtyard and in the distance, a tower could be seen.

Reception were super efficient and charming and the buffet breakfast has something for everybody. The breakfast room is beautifully decorated, as are all the public areas with art pieces dotted here and there. In the evening the lobby lounge is laid out for drinks and nibbles.

We have stayed at one of the sister hotels, which was also excellent but when we return we will reserve the Corona d'Oro once more.
