Booked this hotel because of its location to many of the Bologna old town attractions, and it is a perfect place to base yourself. Hotel is very old, with history including the property being used as places to study, before the university acquired its own premises. We had a suite which was spacious (you are not going to get spectacular views from the rooms) and well maintained, even though the rooms were a little tired, some might say adding to the charm. Housekeeping was good, breakfast first class with a huge choice of quality foods, and the staff very friendly, we will definitely come back here next time.

This hotel is in a side street adjacent to the Duomo, so it is just a few steps to the Piazza Maggiore. Our room on the first floor was quite gloomy, looking out on the building at the back. The room was small and stuffy, even with the air con on, but with the window open there was a lot of street noise. The street by the Duomo seemed to be a gathering point for local kids to sit and drink, and there was a lot of noise at night. There is a bar offering a wine tasting with canapes every evening and the breakfast room in the basement had a good selection for a continental breakfast. The staff were pleasant and friendly and spoke good English. Any quibbles about the hotel are more than made up for by its ideal location

Room Tip: The higher rooms would not suffer from street noise as much

Torni presto a trovarci!

Our trip to Italy was spectacular and a hidden gem that is worthy of mention is the Art Commercianti Hotel in the heart of Bologna, Italy. These hotels are a family run and we were delighted to meet one of the Orsi family owners, Ilaria Orsi, in our historical boutique hotel.
This hotel is a 12th century building brimming with charm and history. We loved everything about Bologna, especially the hotel and staff that constantly strove to deliver Remarkable Service. A notable example that validates the importance of the doing the “little things” in any hotel, was the morning breakfast and amazing cappuccino to kick-start our day.
On two of the three mornings that we were there, Ilaria Orsi, an owner of the hotel, personally made and served our cappuccino with a smile. I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty sure I have never had the hotel owner make or serve me coffee. This amazing hotel is a must when when visiting Bologna. The service was so awesome, I asked Ilaria if I could include this story into my new book, REMARKABLE SERVICE - How to Keep your Doors Open. They are most worthy of the recognition!!

We really loved this charming family-run hotel right in the centre of Bologna. Our room had a balcony from which you could all-but touch the side wall of the Duomo! Staff are relaxed but always professional, too, and the breakfast is a sumptuous feast served by cheerful and helpful people. From the door of the hotel, almost all the main sites, churches, museums and galleries of the city are easily walkable.

Maybe the loveliest aspect of staying at the Art Hotel is that the really beautiful Piazza Maggiore is just a minute's walk away. We rounded off every evening sitting there, having a final drink and watching the world go by. Then retired very happily to our comfortable, quiet room where we slept well, and dreaming of next morning's breakfast!

Room Tip: We loved having a balcony

We stayed in one of the apartments around the corner from the hotel for 4 nights. It was an awkward arrangement as there were too many keys to deal with and breakfast was in the main building which required a traipse around and down. The vagrant that lived in the doorway of the building also made entry and exit more difficult than necessary.

The accommodation was comfortable, but with a little effort, could have been so much better. The electric shutters did not work and were finally fixed 2 days after our arrival. Some of the cookware, namely the espresso pot was not suitable for use on an induction hob so defeated the whole purpose of its existence.

The bathroom lighting although highly stylised, was impractical and dim. The towels were thin, frayed and stained. There was no full length mirror in the room so it was impossible to get dressed properly.

Finally, the power to our room was switched off for one afternoon without any notice. The hotel did offer amends by sending a complimentary bottle of Prosecco and offering a very small discount. But, given room rates well in excess of 300 Euros per night, the standards definitely need improving.

Room Tip: The apartments are not worth the price. Stay in the main building.
