A stone's throw from the Piazza Maggiore in the pedestrian precinct in the heart of central Bologna, the hotel is only indicated by a modest 'Albergo' sign outside. The rooms are well appointed, spacious and quiet. Presumably it was a substantial private residence before to judge by a curiosity: the lift only starts above the first floor, but there are very helpful staff to assist with carrying up the luggage. On the first floor there is a pleasant sitting room with a large breakfast room attached. The breakfast buffet is of high quality and varied, and includes a range of specialist Bolognese meats. Apart from the standard restaurant coffee (Café Americano), the helpful serving staff also offered excellent fresh espresso coffee to order. Overall the hotel offered a very pleasant stay in a location that could not be bettered.
There are quibbles which rather let the hotel down. A first bad impression is the stair carpet, which is frankly grotty and urgently in need of cleaning or replacing. There is often only one person on reception and so he or she is tied up for long periods on the phone. And the air conditioning, like so many added in old buildings as an afterthought, is a concept rather than really working.More
