We stopped off in Bologna as part of a mini euro tour and found most things about this hotel to be excellent. Perfectly located opposite the railway station and with the large historical centre behind which we explored, it was a great place to stop over. A large modern hotel with an office block appearance we had a fifth floor deluxe room complete with usual drink-making facilities, trouser press, wall mounted tv and ensuite bath/shower, Wc & bidet. Having refrained from taking a tablet with us, it was nice to avail ourselves of the limited free computer access to check on our emails. We also enjoyed access to a varied and well presented breakfast altho' as in Paris we thought the scrambled eggs looked highly dubious!! Our only negative comments are that we had booked a double bed and were given two singles pushed together but made up as singles and the lack of English tv channels with entertainment rather than just news updates. We would stay here again for its comfort, location and good value.

The hotel is just in front of the railway station and you can walk everywhere in central Bologna or get a bus or a taxi if you need to go farther. As I said, is a business hotel, clean, quiet if a little impersonal and character lacking. Check-in and check-out were very fast and the people at the reception were great. We got a free upgrade from a deluxe to an executive room with free wi-fi (slow). American breakfast was good but not great. Price is right for what you get. Anyway, the hotel is a solid 4 star and I will be back again.

Stayed there last night on our way back to Dusseldorf from Ferrara. The hotel is right in front of the train station yet the windows are double glass so you won't hear a thing from the outside. We were well addressed when we were arrived and given room 324. When we told them we won't be staying for breakfast since our flight was at 7.25 am and breakfast is at 7, they provided us with a breakfast bag for each of us containing croissant, biscuits, jam, yogurt and yogurt drink. Later on when we wanted to go out for a bite the reception clerk was very rude and was fed up of calling the restaurants to find us a spot. We ended up just walking down the famous street of shops which is around the corner and picked a random restaurant. We were lucky it was a safe choice.
The night sleep was great because the bed was just what I was looking for for a good night rest. As we were leaving the reception clerk asked us if we wanted a taxi and we said yes. From what we saw earlier when we went out that the taxi stop was just in front of the hotel and we thought he would just whistle for one for outside! No he didn't, he ordered one and he came in van (we were 2 people with 1 suitcase and a roll on bag). What bothered us is that the taxi ride cost us more than expected starting at 6.95 where as a smaller car would have started at 4.95. You might think that's not a lot but he could have told us this was the case and we were more than happy to just walk outside and just walk to any small taxi ourselves rather than have to pay for a van! Especially when ur going to a long drive to the airport; the price here matters! Anyway over, the hotel is nice and professional and lives to a true 4 star hotel.

This hotel is located directly across the street from Bologna's main Railway Station , ideal for those arriving or departing by train or bus, there are also many taxis available to.
The hotel itself is first class and reasonably priced considering it is within easy walking distance from the city centre where you will find the many fine restaurants, bars & shops.
The room was clean comfortable and well furnished with every facility one would need during the stay.
Staff were welcoming ,friendly, & would put themselves out to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.
Breakfast was a delight as there was an excellent variety on the menu to suit all tastes.

Room Tip: According to others who stayed in this hotel at the same time all the rooms received good comments...

Our first visit to Bologna and we planned several day trips by train. This is an excellent choice for that...it's directly across from the station (a station that is a hub for high speed trains and local trains alike).
We often stay in hotels with "character" and the Excelsior was very business-like in the modern decor, fast elevators, and good sized rooms with excellent bathrooms.
I note that they have several levels of rooms but I greatly appreciated the clear presentation of room size and room rate. Our room was quite well priced (for Italy in 2013) and just the perfect size. Note also that free wifi in the room might not be available for all rate classes.
The beds were comfortable, the drawer, closet, desk, and bathroom space were perfectly sized.
As with many other hotels in Italy in October, they had turned off their a/c and the fan barely moved the air. But, our room faced the back and it was a bucolic and peaceful as the front of the hotel was noisy and often jammed with people and traffic.
You pay a price for being close to the train station - it's a walk to a lot of the rest of the central city. But, we love walking and Bologna's portico'ed sidewalks are one of it's signature elements....and functional when it's precipitating.
The breakfast deserves a special mention...it was quite extensive and very European - including another of Bologna's most famous things: mortadella! [yes, eating bologna in Bologna is a Must Do. Actually, there are many kinds of mortadella and all quite special] The spread was large, with many breads, cheeses, eggs and excellent espresso.
I'll also note that our toilet became stuck and hotel staff must have run to our room they came so soon...and they were polite, fixed the problem quickly and spoke excellent English.
OK, I'll have to give the Excelsior 4 1/2 stars. 4 isn't enough....

Room Tip: ask for a quite room! The back is bucolic; the front full of traffic and crowds.

The Excelsior is located right across the street from the train station, perfect as a base for exploring nearby towns --Padua, Farrara, Ravenna. The hotel is modern and spotless. Good breakfast. The lobby bar turns into a restaurant in the evening, with a limited - but very good - menu. Service a little spotty, though. Would certainly return, although there are hotels closer to the main Bologna tourist sites and restaurants -- 20 minutes away, walking.

The rooms are large and clean. The breakfast is sumptuous. The reception is helpful. The location is literally one minute from the train station. It's 5 minutes walk from Europcar if you are planning to rent a car. Really good hotel.
