We decided to take a day trip from Florence to Bologna expecting to indulge in some great cuisine and take in the local sites. Having done a lot of research on places to eat, everything was closed. At 1pm in the afternoon! This seemed to be the theme everywhere. Perhaps a national holiday we were not aware of? We had already booked our return train ticket at 5:30pm. Waundering aimlessly around trying to find something that was open was a chore in itself. Then like an oasis in a dessert, we stumbled upon Il Saraceno around 3pm. There were a few other patrons eating on the large covered patio. We were seated outside and started with the mixed vegetable plate. The server asked if we wanted anything else (which we did), and we said we would order a little later. “Sorry, we’re closing soon” as he looked at his watch. You’re kidding right! Just like everything else that day, closed or closing. We quickly ordered our meal.
The mixed vegetable plate had beans, zucchini, and eggplant. It was ok, but better with salt and olive oil.
For main, I had Potato with Rosemary stuffed Tortellini. What a surprise. The best tortellini I’ve ever had. Served with a light béchamel. Each bite was light, with a hint of rosemary that didn’t overpower the rest of the dish. I only wish there was more. My husband enjoyed is pasta alle vongole. No complaints.
We really enjoyed our meal, and would have liked it even more if we were not rushed. I overheard some other patrons (tourists) talking to the server how this was one of their favorite places to eat when in Bologna.
Price point is reasonable, the above with 2 beers – 42 Euros.
Not sure if I would return to Bologna, if we did, I would return. Hopefully it will be open!
