We had read, and been told, so many good things about this restaurant that it was a massive disappointment when we arrived in an empty restaurant to be herded into a back room with all the other tourists. This has happened to us in Italy before and believe me the back room is small in this place. We were hustled into ordering, patronised and eventually served up some distinctly average pasta. It wasn't helped by being elbow to elbow with other diners. If this is what constitutes a top dining experience in Bologna then keep it. Try some of the other restaurants along the road. we ate our pasta and rushed out. The main part of the restaurant was still empty and this was 9:30pm at night. Why do these restaurants do this kind of thing? I would suggest that this restaurant is over-rated and under-whelming.

we were recommended this place by a local bolognese and couldnt be any more enthusiastic about it. we ordered a tris of primi which included the lasagna and we exchanged the gramigna for another pasta which was a nice option. the atmosphere was divine with the pianist playing at meal's end.

We followed some good reviews to this restaurant and were not disappointed! We had not booked but were given a table and provided with excellent service. The staff had charm, character and professionalism. Food was outstanding. Very hard to fault. We had the best meal of our three week trip to Italy (and nearly all the others have been great!) for about €70 including an excellent local wine, coffee, dessert, bread, entree etc. Do not believe the odd negative review of Donatello, it is the real Bolognaise experience.

We loved the fact that this smart looking restaurant was so near our hotel (just round the corner) - the interior is great - white table cloths, portraits on the walls - traditional and stylish. Service was excellent and we ate a good meal. Our reservations: the food is not entirely cooked on site - some things clearly bought in, and there is no fish on the menu! We ate raw mushrooms with parmesan and rocket (good), tuscan bean soup (good and meaty), veal with rocket and parmesan (a theme is developing!), and a fantastic mixed grill. Then we shared a cheese plate - parmesan (excellent), pecorino (excellent), gorgonzola (very good and ripe), and mozarella (very average, supermarket style - why put it on the cheese plate unless it's the best?)

Bologna is the culinary capital of Italy and, on a flying visit to the city, we only had one chance to sample the famed cuisine of Emilia-Romagna. We were delighted that we chose the Restaurant Donatello. What an experience!

The menu is filled with classics from the region. For primo I had to have the lasagne – this city, after all, is the birth place of what everyone else calls Bolognese but the Bolognese themselves call ragu. It was terrific – green pasta and the most delicately balanced Bolognese sauce you can imagine. I was almost in tears. For secondo I had the veal in balsamic sauce, a bothersome sauce that takes an hour of almost constant stirring to perfect. And perfect it was.

Naturally we all sampled each other's food. There wasn't a single dish that didn't blow us away – and we were a very critical crowd. Add to that the restaurant's characterful atmosphere and excellent value and it is hard to imagine a more delightful lunch in Bologna.
