“Great dinner location in a former brothel”
Reviewed December 15, 2012 via mobile

We had a friday night dinner at the Matusel, a former brothel of Bologna. You get inspired by this due to different wall paintings and old photos. The atmosphere is nice and the staff very friendly. There is no set menu besides one at the wall. We had some different fish and seafood dishes which were very good. You could choose as well a traditional Bolognese menu if you like.
We were very pleased with the dinner and the price/value was excellent. I can recommand this place.

“Superb”
Reviewed November 24, 2012

Great atmosphere, immense range of dishes (what is written on the board is barely a tenth of the full menu) - you could probably eat there every day and still try something new. We went on my daughter's recommendation, well deserved. Despite the fact the restaurant was full, there was no sense of being rushed to finish our meal. Will certainly be back, more than once!

“Not convinced!”
Reviewed November 16, 2012

We went to this restaurant for a romantic dinner whilst staying in Bologna.

We started by arriving and the restaurant was empty. We were surprised by this as it seems like such a favorite on Tripadvisor.

We ordered the house red which in all honesty tasted like fizzy vinegar. It was also really cold to disguise the flavour.

The started was the mixed marinated fish which was swimming in oil and extremely fishy. It was accompanied by tasteless bread.

For main course, I had the squid which was so rubbery in texture that I couldn't physically eat it. It was stuffed with some sort of breadcrumb mix which was tasteless. My girlfriend enjoyed her swordfish which was served with a tomato/olive/caper sauce.

We are not normally fussy but in this circumstance, the food was genuinely sub-standard. It doesn't surprise me that the restaurant was very quiet and I wonder whether locals have caught on that the restaurant may have passed its prime.
