This is probably one of the few modern hotels in Bologna. The room was pretty nice, but very small. The bathroom was very good as well. The location of the hotel is quite central, very near the railway station and just 10 min walk from city center. But the area was quite scary, you had to walk through what I will call a dark and scary neibourhood. The worst thing about this hotel is the terrible traffic noise. If you book the cheapest rooms you are guaranted of no sleep. There was a 6 lane highway right outside the hotel, and a bus staion oposite the highway.

Room Tip: If you pay more, you might get a room on the other side of the highway outside the hotel

This was our first trip to Bologna. We had wanted to go there for a while and were finally influenced by an article in the NY Times. Coincidentally, we came across this hotel in an article in the Departures Magazine (AMEX Plat). The hotel is nine iron shot from the train station. Granted the train station is a nightmare and the street the hotel is located is not one of the prettiest, but it is just minutes away. Easy to drag your roll-a-boards.
The hotel tries very hard to be hip and stylish. The lobby is all white and was quite busy when we arrived around 3PM. We stayed in room 201 the first room off the elevator. I was concerned about (security - see below) and the noise from the hall but that never materialized. What did happen was the noise from the adjoining room was loud and annoying to the point we had to go to the desk and complain. The culprit - the hotel hangs their TV's on the wall across the room from the bed. The problem is that the televisions are back to back and share the same cable outlets / conduits. So the sound comes charging through. Even after Ms. Disco diva checked out, the next guest only had on CNN which we heard to all hours.
Our room was great for European standards. It did face the street, which we didn't mind as we live in downtown Philly so traffic noise and police sirens are an every night occurrence The King bed had a very comfortable mattress, reading lights, nice. The bathroom was great. Very large, nice marble, great walk in shower with a sunflower shower head. The only problem was there was no place to put anything. No drawers. Just a small open closet area as a you walk in the room. So you have to live out of your suitcase.
The hotel is a happening place. Every evening as we went out to dinner or returned the place was full of Italian hipsters and want -a-be's. From a security standpoint I had a problem with the stairs and elevator across the lobby from the desk. Anyone could have gone up to any floor. The hotel had no security in the evenings.
Overall the hotel is great. However, it needs some sprucing up. The walls in our sleeping room were dented and scarred from suitcases. The table tops at breakfast were repaired with tape. and for some reason they have turned most of the lobby into the restaurant. The lobby today does not look anything like the pictures on their web site. While it was a good walk to the center of town its location is not a deal breaker.

Room Tip: The rooms on each floor are located down a very long straight corridor. They are all the same in si...

Positives:
The room is spacious and modern as well as the bathroom. There is very good wifi connection in the room. Centrally located. As you exit the train station go left and follow straight until you see it in around 200 meters on your left hand side. You will need to pass only one traffic light. Decent hotel for city centre. Minibar was offered in the room price and included one coca cola, one fanta, two bottles of water (sparkling and not), and a pear juice. Nothing else was in the mini bar only that!

Negatives:
There is no gym although it says that there is a fitness room. Fitness rooms are equipped with fitness material, but here this is not the case. The fitness room is a small spa with basic usage. There is no room service. The breakfast was ok and very medium. At the night we needed to go to town centre (5 minutes walking) to buy food. There is a restaurant on the lobby area which was expensive and decided not to use it. Films on pay tv are old and cost 11 euros per film. Try the baguettes/sandwiches opposite the train station, there is a great selection and totally fresh!

Beware of the period that there is a show in Bologna because the prices double for no reason at all. In the particular hotel our suite (?) was 230$ one day and the other it jumped to 460$ just because there was a fashion show. The breakfast was all self service supermarket fare in a place that was smelly (the place doubles as well as a restaurant for lunch and dinner) and as the temperature was abnormally high there was an abundance of flies on the food. Our suite was at the second floor and looking one of the busiest streets of Bologna it was so noisy we had to buy earplugs. The bathroom was full of humidity stains but clean. Plus of this hotel was that the rooms were very clean and nothing else. You carry your own luggage and you have to pour your own coffee. We couldn't wait to go out of this hotel. Booking.com does not give you the exact details.

We only stayed one night at this hotel as we just wanted a taster of what Bologna was like before moving to the coast. We nearly didn't stay anywhere at all as the cost of all the other hotels where so expensive but eventually I came across this hotel and I think they had a special Sunday night deal on as it was just under a 100 euros including breakfast. You had to park about 100 metres down the road in an underground garage for 15 euros but that is not too bad for an Italian city and it was easy to find.

We had only chosen a basic room and that is what it was but it was fine for an overnight stay. Just a shower rather than a bath but the decor was modern and they left free soft drinks and water for you in the mini bar. We were absolutely exhausted that evening as we had been up since 4 a.m. travelling and after having been for a lengthy walk round Bologna that afternoon, (just turn right out of the hotel and then left and head down Via Indepenzia for about 15 minutes to Duomo) we couldn't face the walk again and trawling round the restaurants so we opted to eat in the hotel restaurant which was only 15 euros including 2 courses and a glass of water and wine!!!!! It wasn't michelin starred by any stretch of the imagination but it had many talking points and it filled a gap. I had salmon and my husband had burgers and they both came on this huge plate filled with all manner of vegetables, salad and bread (the same for both dishes.). But I have to say it was edible if not gourmet and we were starving. The desserts you helped yourself to were very nice. A veritable bargain for Italy really.

Breakfast was really lovely. A huge hunk of parmesan to hack at and parma ham and plenty of cereals, breads and those pastry things the Italians love. Cappuccino was out of a machine as was the natural yoghurt (never seen that before) but both were rather good. I think you will see from the pics how nice it was. I would certainly recommend this hotel for location and budget although you might want to chose something a bit more special for a longer stay.
(also it is very close to bus station and train station and outside the ZTL zones but still close to the action.)

7min walk from trainstation, rooms are trendy and modern but lack a certain soul. Seems kind of cold and lifeless. Bologna is a small city that can be traveled on foot, the location of this hotel has the advantage that the trainstation is close by but other hotels furter could be fine. Staff redcomended bad resteraunt and was not friendly. Breakfast was plentiful and decent. Nice fresh fruit.

We arrived at the hotel relatively late at night and had a lot of trouble finding it. Was a name issue, we thought it would be signposted as "design hotel viale massini" but is actually signposted by the greater hotel group's name. After much confusion and actually considering that it might be located in the very seedy apartment building located next door we finally realized our mistake. Impressions of the immediate surroundings were very negative, as there is the central train station near the hotel, which is quite creepy at night. Not knowing the area well didn't help. Perhaps if we arrived during the day it wouldn't have been so bad. The
helpful gentleman at reception
assured us the area was safe and that the city centre was only a short walk away. We were sceptical and somewhat reluctantly proceeded to check in. The hotel itself was beautiful, living up to the "design" name, being very modern and bright. The rooms were also very modern and clean, although did show a few signs of wear. They seemed to think of a lot, in that some lights near the luggage bay were motion activated and a nice touch. They also had complimentary slippers, which weren't really needed as the room was carpet but were a nice touch! Free wifi was a great inclusion too, it's amazing how many hotels still charge you. Call me cheap but one thing that
impressed me immensely was the complimentary mini bar. Don't get too excited, no alcohol, however there were a few soft drinks, orange juice and mineral water. It may not seem like much but it is a very nice and thoughtful touch, especially since we arrived late and enjoyed the refreshment. It was nice to not have to pay exhorbitant mini bar prices for a sip of juice after a long journey and was much appreciated. It was also indeed a short walk to the center where we were lucky to get some dinner before all the restaurants closed, it is just unfortunate the first impression of the area that we had. Breakfast was included and was continental style. Upon check out we had the same fellow at reception and he was again very helpful in suggesting local attractions to check out. Overall I enjoyed this hotel very much, finding it very modern and considering of the needs of guests. Im glad we didn't let our first impressions of the area change our mind!
