“From the top of the hill with a stunning view!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 25, 2012 via mobile

Katia and her husband relocated from Milan to Urbino with the intention to change their lifes and raise their son in a place were tradition and Italian values still survive. They purchased a house and remodelled with local articrafts. Katia spends her time preparing home food for her customers' breakfast and wonderfull food for her husband (too bad they do not offer lunch or dinner!). Her husband breeds lovely rotweiller dogs which can be trained for both company and surveillance. I wish my wife allowed me to take one home as they are raised with love and were really sweet!

We stayed at Catia and Orlando's B&B Girfalco for one night on our road trip south from Padova recently (late May, 2012). Take a look at the pictures of the site....and multiply times 100 and it is that beautiful!

We arrived by car from the north and east (via Pesaro) and Catia's directions were easy to follow and correct. The countryside driving there was quite beautiful and the drive up to their house is breathtaking! Wow! Is this the place?!

Catia greeted us warmly and showed us around the grounds. She initially wanted to place us in a room downstairs facing east, which I didn't like. It seemed a bit dark, and I had really been looking forward to one of their beautiful sunny rooms indicated on the website. I asked her about it and she was happy to move us to a room upstairs, still facing east, but a bit more spacious and light.

The place is a restored farm house that Catia and Orlando bravely bought in an advanced state of ruin and expertly restored to better-than-original condition (ask to see their "before" photos....amazing!). It looks beautiful yet still in harmony with the architecture and function of a working farm. Their restoration was earthquake proof, which was evident because that night we were awakened by the 20 May earthquake in Emilia Romagna...we heard the unmistakable noise of the quake (we're from Seattle, afterall), but didn't feel it given the sturdy remodel.

The property is beautiful! 360-degree amazing views from all around the house! We were there in the Spring and the fields of wheat below were green, the poppies and sambuca were in bloom, and hundreds of birds could be heard everywhere!

Catia and Orlando are originally from Milano and have taken the leap out on their own to live a new kind of life running a B&B in the Le Marche countryside. They have been running it for about five years. In addition, they raise some Rottweiler dogs in a set of kennels on the farm property.

Catia's advice on dinner (she recommended not going to Urbino, bur rather instead to the nearby Urbania, about 10K away) was a good choice. We ate at a place called "Big Ben" after a nearby clock tower...mostly local families, but with good food well prepared.

Catia and Orlando also quite nicely provided and extensive wine list in the room and we ordered a bottle (I think 4E? less?, but I don't think she charged us in the end) of an amazing local Lacrima di Morro d'Alba straight from the cask. If you haven't tried this wine, do yourself a favor and do so! You might think, given the name, that it was from the Piedmont, but it is a varietal unique to this region. Very floral, spicy, not too sweet, nicely dry. Complex. A great discovery.

Breakfast was scrumptious and consisted of a generous selection of breakfast fruit tarts (crostata) that Catia made herself, along with coffee/tea & juice.

Our room (called Cincia) was spacious with a kitchen/living/dining room, hallway, bath and large bedroom. Very clean and bright, quite nice. The kitchen had a fridge, sink and gas stove with basic utensils. I was torn between giving this a 4 of 5 star rating because we had really wanted the west-facing "matrimonial" rooms, and felt we had reserved a long-ways in advance, but perhaps I hadn't communicated that preference clearly enough. At this point they were occupied.

I give it a 5 star review because overall it is a beautiful place and Catia and Orlando are working hard to make it a wonderful experience (THANKS!). They are warm and engaging and have created a perfect respite from the hassles of city life.

I would love to return here and spend more time next time!

-Karl

Room Tip: As about the west-facing rooms upstairs. They are probably a bit more, but I think the west-facing v...

This has been our third visit to Girfalco and we consider Catia and Orlando our friends. The house is ideally located between Urbino and Urbania. Catia has several apartments and rooms and all are pleasantly fitted out.
Breakfast is a good start to the day and Catia serves a very varied breakfast. She is an excellent cook and we have always eaten dinner with her and the family.
We shall return when next in the area.

Girfalco is an excellent place if you just want to relax and enjoy the view. it is situated on a hill, just the house and fields around. We were there by motorbike and enjoyed driving around the lovely hills. The puppies and cats were our company. You can visit nearby places, like Urbino (small town, great ice-cream), San Marino (great for shopping or just walking around, a bit touristy though), San Leo (fantastic small town on a rock, really worth visiting).

Room Tip: Rooms are simple, but very lovely and decorated with taste. Very clean. Great view.
