“Beautiful country setting near Urbino”
Reviewed July 16, 2011

This country house was wonderful. We stayed in the 2 bedroom apartment for our family of four. The room also had a bathroom and main room with kitchen. Overall we'd recommend this hotel for the following:
1) Large clean room with a terrace
2) Beautiful views of the rolling hills of the countryside
3) Just a few minutes from Urbino which is worth a visit
4) Excellent value
5) Owners are great hosts
Keeping it from a highest recommendation:
1) Location: difficult to find even with GPS and located at the end of a curvy, hilly, gravel road
2) Meal: We ate there the first night (half board is a 18 euro/person option) - it wasn't bad but perhaps our most disappointing meal of our 1 week trip
3) No AC and weak wireless internet signal (not available in room)

The dinners of truffles with pasta or veal and several other tasty dishes, washed down with all the local wine you can drink, are what make this peaceful spot memorable and especially good value. Just a few minutes drive from Urbino in a very basic converted farmhouse that attracts a nice mix of guests - middle-aged couples and young families, with the welcoming host creating a friendly atmosphere over dinner in the small dining room. Clean room with ensuite bath, but no frills and on our perhaps unseasonably cold and wet two nights in early May it was rather chilly with no obvious way to heat the room.

Room Tip: Ask for a view across the hills

Stayed just one night at Ca'Vernaccia. Didn't have a problem finding it. Just head to Pallino and when you see via Panoramica, just head down the hill and keep going. The owners have done a beautiful job restoring the building. They have created 7 small apartments and 5 rooms. The views are nice and area quite. Not sure if there would be enough outdoor spaces if all of the apartments/rooms were full. We were there in early November and there was only one other guest.

The apartments are new and our kitchen had a very large supply of pots and pans. Surprisingly, there weren't any cooking utensils, which would make cooking a bit challenging. No coffee pot. The apartment was small with a bedroom (in our case a real queen and bunk beds), a kitchen with table and chairs and one additional chair and the bathroom. I can't imagine staying here with spouse and 2 children for more than an night or two. For a couple, it would be fine. Some apartments do have a small couch which would have been better. We also had a TV with many channels but it mounted quite high. In peeking at other apartments, this was not always the case. As mentioned by others, breakfast was nothing to look forward to but there was plenty of coffee.

I don't recall how we found out about Country House Ca' Vernaccia, but we were looking for someplace different from where we were planning to stay in Assisi and Rome — we booked ahead so we wouldn't have to worry about places to stay. After looking at the places in Urbino and consulting the web site (locandaurbino.com) and email contact with the owner, Umberto, we decided to take a chance and stay here. It turned out to be our favorite among the five places we stayed in Italy.

First things first — it's hard to find; that's not good for somethings, but it's great for a hideaway. The map on the web site makes perfect sense once you've been there, but not so much beforehand. The easiest thing to do is to consult the GPS coordinates given on the web site (43°45'25" N / 12°39'01" E), but if you look at the map (at least on google maps) closely, you won't see it; there are only a couple small buildings that have since been turned into the Country House and La Locanda la Tartufara. You'll need to find your way to SP Montefabbri headed toward Pallino Secondo. In Pallino Secondo there are at least two entrances to Via Panoramica, they both lead to the same one-lane gravel road headed down the moderately steep hill — that's the one you want, follow it to the end, as the road turns toward Country House Ca' Vernaccia instead of going straight as the map shows. The views, as the name of the road suggests, are quite lovely.

We stayed in one of the five appartamenti, La Trave, which are not included in the six rooms (camere) indicated in the property details. It has a kitchen and sitting area in addition to the room and bathroom (shower, no tub). It was also (according to the email we got) €36 per person per night instead of the €32 for a plain room.

The kitchen was simple and functional — for good or for ill I didn't see a microwave the entire time we were in Italy — with a sink, range, and small fridge. The bed was very comfortable, a proper double bed instead of a double-twin bed. The bathroom was large, which was good as there was no shower curtain. The windows even had screens, not that there seemed to be a lot of bugs. They were the only screens we saw in Italy, and they were only the temporary expandable insert kind, but they were screens and you can see the moiré pattern where the screens overlap.

There weren't many people around if you needed something, and nobody spoke much English, or anything but Italian (this being Italy). That made communication slow, but it worked nicely with a little patience. We were able, for instance, to gather from Umberto that he'd been there five years, and that he hunted his own truffles (for the eponymous Locanda on site) with his dog. I got the impression that we were the first Americans, or non-Italians, to stay there, though I'm not sure of that. In any event, he seemed genuinely pleased to see us, and everyone else who came.

While the comfortable Country House in its scenic setting is all very good, the star of the place is the on-site Locanda la Tartufara, specializing as its name apparently suggests (since I don't know Italian) in truffles year round. We went with Umberto's suggestions and had the best and most interesting meal during our stay in Italy. Nothing we had was like anything we had everywhere else we went. There are three places to sit in the Locanda: upstairs, in the basement, and in a small open courtyard off of the basement. The upstairs (in the building in the picture) has a bar- or pub-like atmosphere, while the basement is plain modern with an assortment of antiques and other interesting sights, including Umberto and others with their prize truffles. Breakfasts, on the other hand, were rather utilitarian. One problem with the Locanda if you're staying at the Country House but not eating there is that it fills up the somewhat limited parking, and we were there mid-week. Our second night, when we ate in Urbino, we had to squeeze into a spot, but by morning most of the cars were gone.

After the hustle and intensity of Rome and Assisi, we were ready for something different, and the very-rural Country House Ca' Vernaccia along with the college-town atmosphere of Urbino, with its lovely Galleria Nazionale delle Marche (National Gallery of Marche) in the Palazzo Ducale and its lovely and serene (and very untouristy) Basilica Cattedrale Maria Sanctissima Assunta were just what we were looking for. We even went to Mass in Italian one evening in a side chapel of the cathedral with a hand full of locals; while I didn't understand a lot of the words, the movements were familiar, and it was a deeply spiritual experience. It was also the first Mass I'd been to where the priest faces the altar with the people since I was young.
