“Fresh fish by the sea”

Very good choice of fresh fish right on the sea. Service good and helpful, a bit expensive but you have real fresh fish. Portions OK.

“fresh local seafood and a beautiful view”
Reviewed May 14, 2012

We've eaten here lots of times and keep coming back. If you're flying into Ancona from London on the 13.05 flight, you can just about make it here in time for lunch. Worth it too. The seafood is very good indeed (they fish it themselves) and is all beautifully prepared. Go for the mixed antipasti, followed by a main (secondo) and a vegetable dish - The antipasti and main dishes are very good indeed and, whilst the pasta is good, there are places which do better.

“Excellent seafood in Portonovo”
Reviewed April 6, 2012

I read the other reviews (all in Italian), and they're all over the map. Some of the really negative ones were hard to believe, so one suspects something else is going on. Anyway, our experience was quite good. We were there for lunch slightly off season, twice in fact. Everything we had was very good. This included a daily special of spaghetti with several types of seafood, and a simple olive oil, butter, and parsley sauce; steamed local mussels; and fried calamari and shrimp. It's a beautiful setting, and the price was quite reasonable.

My only complaint would be that the menu is somewhat limited, and there is an emphasis on fried food (most of the vegetable choices were fried, for example, except for roasted potatoes and a vegetable gratin; salads were available).

But everything was fresh and nicely prepared.

The beach area is undergoing construction as I write, and my sense from reading the signs about it is that they're reducing the parking space and trying to implement a mixed public/private transportation system to get there. It wasn't clear how that would work, so I would suggest finding out about it before you go.

“Great food, great atmosphere, great view”
Reviewed January 24, 2010

We've eaten here a handful of times, during various stays in Portonovo. The restaurant is one of a handful of eating places, all fish-focused, strung around the curve of the bay, directly on the shingle beach. Arguably, it's the best of them.

Inside, the decor is vaguely nautical; a single wood-panelled dining room with large windows looking out to sea. It's a popular place and, once in full swing, can be noisy and frenetic, but a great atmosphere, and the service never seems to slip. The food is simple and delicious: souté di vongole, platefuls of crisp, rustling pesce azzurro, wonderfully fresh fish.

In warmer weather you can sit outside. On our wedding anniversary we ate at a table directly on the beach, its legs pushed into the shale, watching the lamps on the boats in the bay as darkness fell. About as romantic as you could get!

Marcello himself is usually in attendance, and keen to ensure that everyone has enjoyed themselves. Because it gets busy, especially in summer, it's best to arrive early or book ahead.
