Be sure to see St. Peter's Basilica, but not without a competent tour guide. There is so much meaning and stories hidden in every design, nook, and cranny that will so enhance your visit.

The line to the Basilica is VERY long. If you go into the Vatican there is a side entrance into the Basilica that is meant for tours. If you are able, attach yourself onto a tour in the chapel and walk through this exit on your right. You will skip the entire line and go straight into the Basilica. You must have your knees and shoulders covered and they are strict about this. Inside is beautiful and there is a lot to see. There are private areas for prayer and even booths for confession. It only takes about 20 minutes once inside to see it all but it is worth it if you are able to skip the line.

I have heard of people waiting for hours to get in the basilica. My husband and I arrived at St. Peter's just before 8am and we got through the line in 10 minutes. At that time of day, the tour groups haven't shown up yet and it's not very crowded. The basilica is absolutely gorgeous, among the most beautiful cathedrals I've seen.

The dome is totally worth it. There are a ton of stairs, the walls are close and there is not a way to turn back if you decide to not go all the way up. If you are not in very good shape or claustrophobic, I would not advise going up to the dome. You first go near the top of the inside of the main dome and see mosaics and the paintings in the dome up close. Then, you walk up others stairs to get to the outside observatory deck where there are fabulous views (and picture taking opportunities) of Rome rooftops and the basilica square.

The biggest church in the world. The size alone is impressive. Filled with incredible statues. Admired the pieta.
