This marble and bronze monument to Pope Urban VIII was created by sculptor Bernini to commemorate his sponsor who continued the construction of St Peter's Basilica. The pope is depicted in a commanding pose giving benediction with the figures of Charity and Justice at his side. The figure Death is shown writing the pope's name in the book of eternal memory. Great details are depicted in this sculpture.
This is a big bold statue/monument of Pope Urban VIII, sculptured by Bernini, 9and assistants) that took twenty years to complete. It fits in quite well of the surrounds of the basilica. Definitely a must viewing.
There is soooo much stunning beauty in St Peters Basilica, hard to isolate any one piece, and yet, the Tomb of Urban VIII stands out.
A monument to Pope Urban VIII composed by Bernini. It has a high white marble pedestal that supports a bronze sculpture of the Pope giving a blessing. The bees of the Barberini family coat of arms is displayed here while individual bees have been placed on the monument. These bees can bee seen throughout St. Peter's Basilica.
