It is almost upsetting how unpleasant the visit to something so beautiful can be. The chapel is a wonder, the art and beauty of it is breathtaking but they let in so many people you feel like a sardine in a can! You are shepered in and told to make no noise and then all you can do is look up, from whatever position you managed to gain. There is no hope of walking around or see different bits as it is just too crowded - you are better off looking at photos of it! If you are in the museums already then of course go but if you are considering going at all, evaluate carefully what you are hoping to gain from the visit (photographs are forbidden too) If you are at all ill at ease with crowded spaces, avoid it at all costs!

Photography is not allowed in the Sistine chapel and I respect that. I haven't taken any photo inside. This place if full of people but very peaceful. I kept gazing at the painting of Michelangelo for a good amount of time and didn't feel like leaving the place. Its miraculous

While I recommend doing "skip the line" keep in mind that is only to get into the Vatican compound. Once inside there is more than a line, it is like a mob scene. Inside the Sistine Chapel there are so many people it is hard to take in the beauty of this place because you have to watch you are not stepping on someone There are benches along the side to sit and look at the ceiling from. I suggest you sit on each side to keep from straining your neck. Definitely worth going to see and skip the line can save you several minutes.

Supposedly the official residence of the Pope..The new Pope is selected here..On the ceiling and walls, paintings here were done by Michaelangelo... Truly amazing art work done 500 years ago...

Incredible artwork and amazing ceiling painted by Michelangelo. This is a must see while in the Vatican. Try to go during the quieter early hours before the crowds arrive.

The Sistine Chapel was included in our Vatican Museum tour. The art itself is awesome. The Chapel isn't as large as I had envisioned. The entire museum was crowded. I can't imagine being anywhere near Rome and not making time to see this.

The history of the setting is mind boggling
The magnificent work, the devotion of the artist and his assistants and the political significance of the work is wonderful
If only the hundreds of tourists would respect the need for quiet
It could be better
