Fontana del Moro (Fountain of the Moor) is one of the three major fountains found at Piazza Navona. This one was originally designed by Giacomo della Porta in 1575 but refurbished by Bernini in 1653.

Bernini added the central statue, a Moorish figure, who is standing on a giant conch and fighting with a dolphin. The Moor is surrounding by four tritons placed around the fountain basin. Collectively, it is a nice composition of mythical creatures. The fountain is nice to see during the day with blue skies and again at night when floodlights light up the monument.

Generally speaking, Fontana del Moro is less elaborate and impressive than Fontana del nettuno (Fountain of Neptune) on the opposite side of Piazza Navona or the famous Fountain of Four Rivers situated in the centre of the square. However it is still worth having a look if you enjoy historic monuments like these.

Granted, the "four Rivers" fountain in the center of Piazza Navona, by the grand master Bernini, is the shining star, but Bernini also contributed to the Fontana del Moro on the south side of Piazza Navona. The fountain itself was the work of Giacomo della Porta in the 16th century. This fountain is surely worth visiting, although the statues are copies since the 19th century.

The Fontana del Moro or Moor Fountain is a fountain depicting a Moor. The fountain had additions over the years as the original design didn't incorporate a Moor at all. The original four Tritons were move to the Galleria Borghese and replaced with copies. Yet you can still see the completed version as it stands. Located withing the Piazza Navona, the fountain has a wonderful backdrop of busy piazza. There are benches along the area where one can rest and enjoy the fountain.
