Description: One of the best restaurants in Rome, if not in Italy, La Pergola is much more than just a famous menu. Its three-Michelin stars - the only Rome restaurant to be accorded such an honour - attest to the excellence of its cuisine. A wine cellar with over 53,000 bottles, a water menu with 29 choices, olive oils and vintage balsamic vinegars from the best producers in Italy, and the finest ingredients to be sourced in the Mediterranean -- all attest to the pursuit of culinary excellence. In the last decade the major Italian gastronomic guides such as L'Espresso, Gambero Rosso, Bibenda have consistently voted La Pergola the "Best Restaurant of Rome" and one of the best in Italy. Since November 2005 the Michelin Guide has honoured La Pergola with 3 stars and 5 forks, symbol of exceptional cuisine and "worth a special journey". Furthermore, the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences has awarded La Pergola with the coveted "Five Star Diamond Award!" Each year the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences, renowned worldwide, bestows its coveted International STAR DIAMOND AWARD exclusively on five star establishments that are deemed to be of pinnacle quality by its esteemed Board of Trustees. The award is the most prestigious emblem of achievement and true quality: an award many strive for, but few obtain.

This is the first 3 Star Michelin award restaurant I have been to.
To be very honest, my expectation was extremely high.

We ordered the Gourmet Menu that comes with 9 Courses.

So here's 2 dishes I would like to talk about.

The Foie Gras with Apple, Almond and Amaretti taste heavenly!
It is the first time I have tasted Foie Gras in such way.
There is something really special I can't describe with words.
Fruity sensation with some crunches of Almond, without the lost of the basic texture of the Foie Gras.

The second dish is Fagottelli "La Pergola"
I read and watch Heinz Beck's signature Carbonara Fagottelli.
Expecting it to be really delicious, it turned out that the taste doesn't suit me.
My opinion of it: Salty.

I still believe it is very nice for the mass, maybe just not for me.

We last visited La Pergola some years ago and we were glad we had the chance to return. The food was of course excellent as you would expect - not quite the challenge to the taste buds that other 3 star restaurants can be however all the dishes were constructed with care and flair. The service was first class without stuffiness or ego. Fabulous.

The views, the service, the atmosphere, the food and the wine.

If you want a cheap night out, you will be disappointed. So you should be. Three star Michelin cooking, is the world wide gold standard. It demands consistent excellence. This restaurant justify its accolade as the only 3 star in Rome.

My wife does not eat fish. This was accommodated into the tasting menu without the blink of an eye. One of the replacement dishes, the foie gras dish, was outstanding.

The accompanying matching wines were clearly explained and beautifully subtle and complex as the food deserved.

I have read complaints about the views and the service. The first is nonsense. Get up and walk to the balcony at any time before, during and after the meal! The service was both warm and genuinely helpful. The number of languages I heard spoken during the night by the staff was worth three stars on its own.

We got to speak to the chef afterwards which was a nice and welcome touch. It does not have the visual magic of the Fat duck, nor the challenges to your perceptions of taste. It is not as rich as the Waterside Inn (the food that is). It is just beautiful food prepared with obvious care and passion. Stunning.

We booked a table here for dinner as part of our Honeymoon and I have to say it didn't disappoint.

Pre-dinner drinks on the terrace overlooking an unseasonably warm October proved delightful.

We each chose the 7 course tasting menu, with replacements for the meat course as I only eat fish.

The tuna tartare with tomatoes was delicious, as well as 'the sea' soup which was fantastic, with a little theatre in the way the fish is placed and soup poured. The lobster carpaccio was also very good. The other 2 fish courses were also excellent - I can't comment for the meat!!

A large mirrored box of petit fours arrived before the cheese trolley which was also great.

Wine recommendations were well made and appropriately priced and matched to the meal. Excellent and definitely rivalled Jules Verne although the price was a little less for an evening meal!
