“Haven from Busy City”
Reviewed December 5, 2015 for a stay in November 2015

We are an older couple, and we like to stay in one place for an extended period of time to get the true flavor of the community and its people. This large, airy apartment on the south wall of the Vatican was almost perfect. The second bedroom gave us space to spread out, iron and have the option to have a guest if we had wanted. It looks just like the pictures! Claudia was a charming hostess who met us when we arrived to give us the keys and to show us around. She also helped us on a couple occasions, and made sure we were comfortable with enough coffee, tea, and light breakfast food to get us started. We only had a few "issues" which you should carefully consider: 1) Via Nicolo V is a short street on a hill. You access Via Aurelia and the closest bus stops via a long, steep flight of stairs at the lower end of the street. A number of vagrants and unsavory characters hang out on these steps at times. We were mugged and robbed within a week. This could have happened anywhere in Rome; but we learned not to use the steps at night or when it was occupied with ruffians. Instead, we would take the #46 bus to the bus stop at the top of the hill on Via Aurelia and walk down. Bring a small flashlight for doing this in the dark! 2) Compared to some of the more touristy parts of Rome, Via Nicolo V is a quiet street. However, be prepared to try to sleep between midnight and 7am. Starting around 7am, this apartment, which faces onto the street, experiences the matins bells from St. Peter's, the wails of police cars as they rush down Via Aurelia (are they the neighborhood alarm clock???), the revving of all manner of 2 cylinder vehicles, neighbors chatting loudly in the street while they walk their little yapping dogs, the slamming of doors as people within the building come and go, and perhaps most annoying, the loud crashing of things flung into the public garbage and glass bins that are directly under the bedroom windows! 3) If it is important to you to have a dryer for doing the laundry, be advised that there isn't one. There is a drying rack in one of the closets. It appears that neighbors hang their clothes outside off their balconies, so bring some clothes line wire and a few good clothes pins if you plan to use the outside method.

Outside of those few things, we could highly recommend this apartment and Claudia, its lovely manager. We would recommend getting to know the bus system. The #46 is the closest bus. It runs to Piazza Vecchio which is tourist central for all the old stuff. The #49 stop is at the top of the hill (walk uphill on Via Nicolo to Via Aurelia and turn left at the junction to get to the bus stops). The 3rd stop going towards the Vatican is the Vatican Museum stop. The 4th stop is a piazza where multiple bus lines cross. The #492 can be caught where the #49 leaves you off. The #492 takes you around Castel Sant'Angelo, Piazza Vecchio and the Trevi Fountain. The #64 bus can be caught from the bus stop near the south entrance to Piazza St. Pietro. It goes through all the tourist areas to Termini train station. Get a good bus map; and good luck! The best place to get bus passes is the nearby bar at Vatican Terminal across the street from the post office.

Last piece of advise: if you are arriving by air, take the SIT bus from the bus stop at Terminal 3 to the stop near Piazza Cavour. You can take the #49 bus from there to the apartment. Or, a taxi direct to the apartment is 10-14 euro.

Dear Miss Joey,
thanks a lot for having spent so much time for describing deeply my apartment!!I'm happy you appreciated the location but i'm sorry to read something that is not absolutely true about the place and the flat.
I rent the apartment since 2 years and it's the first time that the surroundings have been described as the Bronx;)...being really near to the Vatican, the Street is mostly populated by priests and people who works there, all very good and people to recommend. The ruffians and the gipsy that you saw usually aren't there, nobody told me about them, even because a lot of police is there and there are lights everywhere. The stairs you mentioned are the most rapid way to reach the shops and the amenities around the flat and the bus number 46 stops in front of them so it's comfortable and very useful to reach the city center in few minutes. In all the big cities like Rome and being the apartment in a building with other apartments is normal hearing the traffic, the public garbage, and some of the neighbours coming back home. I cannot avoid it ;)
In the apartment there is a washing machine, and a drying rack, it's really difficult to find a dryier in apartments for tourists. I prefer not to have a line wire for clothes but ,as I said, a drying rack because it's more decent and safer. If you had call me i could suggest you a good laundry service that is 200 metres far from the flat. Anyway, I really loved meeting you and i hope to host you again in the future. Have a nice 2016!Kind regards, Claudia

“Wonderful & Considerate Host and Lovely apartment!”

Claudia was the most considerate host! She kept in touch regularly from before I flew in to Rome and guided me through to greet me at her gate. She welcomed my family and me very graciously and warmly. The flat was exactly as had been mentioned on the site. It is very tastefully decorated and there were enough provisions kept thoughtfully to prepare our breakfasts and meals. The location was also perfect and within walking distance of the Vatican, as well as connected by Train and Bus to the rest of the city. Claudia also very helpfully helped us order some meals from the nearby restaurants and arranged us a taxi to take us to the airport. Staying at her lovely apartment was a very pleasant memory of the Rome trip! Would totally recommend it to any visitor - especially with family.
