After being taken for an absolute ride by a restaurant near our hotel on Rome, we came across this one called Il Gallo Nero in Via Principe Amedeo. There was no pressure to come in and sit down, the waiter possibly the owner kindly let us know he had 3 menus to choose from, told us what they were and then left it to us......we gave it a go and had one of the best meals ever. So much so that we went back the following 2 nights. The waiters were so kind and helpful and on the last night were given a dessert and drink on the house! Very pleasant staff, the food was excellent, the waiters made us all laugh and I would definately recommend it to anyone visiting Rome. Its only about 3 blocks from Roma Termini train and bus station.

We were very happy we decided to eat at il Gallo Nero which was a few doors down from our hotel - Starhotels Metropole. Walking by, the maitre'de (owner) shared that the restaurant has been operated by 3 generations of his family. The service was excellent with and quick, continuous response by the waiter and personal attention by the owner. I had a dinner special (18 Euro) that included big salad, lasagna, braised beef with big bowl of fresh fruit for dessert. Serving sizes were large and you won't leave hungry. The food was excellent. My wife and daughter had risotto and saltimbocca that both raved about. The bill for three was 65 Euro including a nice bottle of wine. We enjoyed the friendly and attentive service, great food and clean premises. We left very full and satisfied, and returned a few nights later for dessert after a less than satisfied experience at another nearby restaurant.

We were on our way to catch a train to the airport on our last day in Rome. Looking to catch a quick meal before our flight, we found this place. A quick plate of pasta, it was nice, we ate it, no problems.
The waiter asked us if we needed dessert or coffee. We said no thank you, that's all.
We waited a little while for the bill to come, the waiter had made a few trips past us but no sign. We weren't concerned, but decided we needed to go. We got up from our table, and the waiter appeared.
"Bill comes to table," he told us, unnecessarily rudely, we thought.
We sat back down, and, when he came back, he said "You are Australians, yes?"
We had to admit we were.
"Only Australians leave the table to pay the bill, all the time. Is this what happens in Australia?"
We explained that it was sometimes, others not, it doesn't really matter.
He then said to us "You are in Europe now, this is how Europe does it, you will follow Europe Rules."
We didn't find it necessary to discuss the matter any further with this gentleman, just had a bit of a laugh as we left.
And put it on Trip Advisor. ;-)

We have returned from a city break to Rome. We stayed at The Hotel Universo which is a good quality hotel very near the city centre with all the major attractions nearby.

We ate out every evening and tried a variety of eateries. Needless to say the best one we came across was a few yards from our hotel and it was signposted as Trattoria and called il Gallo Nero. This translated is The Black Chicken.

As we sat down at the pavement area we were given a complimentary glass of Prosecco with the menu cards. I had the tourist 'Fish' menu and my wife the 'Chicken' menu. My first course was spaghetti and clams, followed by a whole grilled sea bream and a fresh fruit salad. My wife started with a superb mozzarella and tomato salad, followed by two pieces of chicken and chips and fruit salad as sweet. We chose a jug of red house wine that was served chilled and was excellent. My meal cost €20 and the litre of wine €10. Having paid €18 for a small plate of spaghetti and clams alone at other restaurants nearby you may well imagine my enthusiasm for this particular eatery.

There was no table or service charge and this was unusual for such a place.
