“Cheap & Cheerful”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2012

It is what it is....a cheap guest house 10 minutes walk from the Central Train Station in Rome and within walking distance of most of the sights. It has friendly staff and a place to lay your head after busy day sightseeing.

But comfort is isn't, the pillows were very lumpy and the fan just generated hot air. The light only turned on with a bit of cable wiggling, the fridge wasn't cold, oh and the hairdryer came off the wall as soon as we picked it up. It was all a bit rickety.

We were not expecting luxury and were travelling on a low budget, but on reflection we should have paid a little extra at the outset and found somewhere else. I would not recommend it if you plan to travel in July or August, but to pay the extra and get air con. It was stifling at times in the room. The shower was very good though!!

If you want a cheap place to lay your head and close to all the sights then it is ok.

I would recommend this hotel for the reasonable price. We have just returned from a 3 night stay in the hotel. The room was very clean, spacious and comfortable and in a good location. The staff were friendly and on time to meet us. Do take note of the other comments though and go prepared. The hotel door is large & wooden with a number 12, between a cafe and pub, no mention of a hotel! We recognised it from the description someone had posted on here. There is NO breakfast provided, nor tea & coffee making facilities, but the two cafes downstairs do a breakfast-but not for the cheap price someone had mentioned. Our room was very clean & spacious, no airconditioning provided but as the rooms are on the ?5th floor there was an airy breeze (it was 37c when we came back yesterday, so very hot!) Thankfully the lift was working for us, rather antiquated but served its purpose. If you check in late you do have to pay extra as this is not a hotel, just a top floor of rooms let out to touists. The large building is obviously used for other people/offices. Also remember that you have to pay the city tax of 2 euros per person per night in cash on arrival. The shower was good, plenty of hot water, hairdryer, a fridge in the room and a safe. It all felt very secure as you have to get through 3 locked doors to enter your room. The rooms are great as a base to explore Rome, if you like to spend time and relax in your room with a balcony etc this is not for you. We left around 9am and got back about midnight just to sleep. We din't find the noise a problem at all.
The accomodation is near the Termini station which is convenient for the buses and metro. Do beware of pickpockets around that area who apparently work in groups-but we had no problems. We used the shuttle bus for the airport which was between 4-8 euros pp depending on which airport in Rome. It was good & reliable.
We found plenty of reasonable places to eat around the side streets, even some great white wine for 2 euros per glass. Prices for meals did vary, obviously in the more touristy spots you pay so much more. We would recommend the usual places, but also try the pretty Trastevere area for eating, Piazza Navona to have a drink, and the Open Top Bus Tour (2 hours) where you can hop on & off (22euros for 24 hrs) If you want to do the Coloseum/Forum and Vatican museum I would HIGHLY recommend you book on line before as we did- you beat all the queues. St Peter's church is free, most impressive, especially if you climb to the top of the dome the sight across the city is amazing. Just take the elevator (7euros) which takes you part the way up, then it is still a long climb up stairs but well worth it.
We had a great time during our 4 days...use some basis phrases as the Italians obviously appreciate our efforts...take flat shoes as the cobbled streets are not made for heels, and the sights seemed quite spread out...and enjoy!

Room Tip: If you want A/C you have to book in advance and pay extra as you would expect. Only some roos have A...

ROME, ITALY

This B&B is a great location to stay in Rome, especially if your stay is 5 to 10 days because of the location you have easy access to all the sights and monuments. The termini is only a five to seven minute walk away where you can catch a train, or the metro, or a bus which will take you anywhere in the city and locations in suburban Rome. There are many good restaurants which serve good food and at reasonable prices. You can choose from traditional italian, chinese, or american cuisine. You couldn"t find a more helpful staff anywhere, the rooms are very clean with ensuite bathrooms which are cleaned daily. We have stayed there many times on our trips to Italy so we can say the service and accomodations have always been excellent. If you have a concern, no problem they will address it right away. You get great value for your money as the prices are very modest compared to other places in Rome for the accomodations and service. We have always felt safe at this location and have moved about freely without incident, we would highly recommend this location for your stay in Rome. And last but not least, the owners are great people and will help you in any way that they can to make your stay an enjoyable one.

This is a nice B&B in a convenient location. It’s by no means glamorous, but considering the prices in Rome it’s a pretty good deal. It’s a no frills B&B however the location is good and staff super-friendly. I didn’t like the 20 EUR “late” check-in charge payable in cash only though; and we were checking it at 8pm or so, not midnight.

Location: in short, very good. Very close to Termini station – this is where you will get off the train from Fumicino airport. So if you’re arriving on a Friday night and don’t fancy spending a lot of time trying to find the place where you’ll be staying that night, this is perfect – it’s literally a 5, maybe 7 minute walk Once you get to the B&B though it gets more civilized, and between the B&B and the centre proper it’s OK. It’s a 15min walk to Colloseum, Piazza Venezia, maybe 30mins to Pantheon, Fontana di Trevi, etc. Vatican you can easily reach by the subway train (Metro) from the Termini station, it’s only 1EUR per ticket and 5 stops or so. Most of the sights you can reach by foot though, we only had to commute to the Vatican and the Catacombs.

General dodginess of the area: beware that the area around the train stations is one of the most dodgy ones I have seen in Rome – beggars, touts, warnings about pickpockets on welcome screens of ticket machines, etc! When trying to buy return tickets for the airport from an automated machine some guy first decided to “guide” us through the process, “helping” us click our way through the English language menu (a ridiculously simple task which requires no help…), then asked for money. On another occasion we were directed to some agency which sells those tickets with an extra fee of their own on top of the price – it all takes place within the train station terminal, I can’t imagine any other European city where this sort of thing would be happening. Generally, in Rome, you get short-changed, credit cards are refused more often than not, etc.

Room: clean and decent size, definitely much better than rooms for similar prices in UK countryside, for example! Bathroom is en-suite, clean and looked like it may have been refurbished quite recently. I would say the room is of comparable standard to most 3 star hotels. Two glitches: safety box in the room is tiny and not attached to anything solid – a thief could just grab it and walk out with it. Room is noisy, ours was 5th floor and the noise from the street was definitely too loud.

Staff: super friendly, took the time to explain the location and the sights to us, helped us carry the bags to the first floor (lift wasn’t working).

Hidden charges: 20EUR for late check-in which I’ve mentioned. 2EUR per person per night city tax, payable, again, in cash only (this must apply to all hotels in Rome though). I don’t know what you would have to do if you arrived from overseas with no EUR cash and only credit cards on you. 15EUR fee for storing luggage for a few hours after check-out (9:30am), which we somehow ended up not paying though. Breakfast not included.

If you’re the sort of person who likes to spend a lot of time in their room and enjoys a bit of luxury, this isn’t a place for you. If you’re however visiting London on a long weekend break and will be spending most of the time out and about, visiting the sights or eating out, the location is very convenient and value for money good.

I gave this hotel and excellent based on cleanliness, location, friendly staff, and price. I felt safe and comfortable. I slept well and it was a worry free stay. The B & B doesn't mean they serve breakfast though -- I think it means Bed & Bathroom -- because you get your very own en-suite, no going down the hall and waiting for your turn.

Location: This place is the perfect spot to stay if you want to see Rome, but also escape some of the busy crowds. You can walk right out the door and sit in a little cafe or hop the metro or bus to anywhere in the city. It was a short (5 to 10 minute) walk to the main Termini station in one direction, in another you would be at the Coloseum, and both of these directions would be riddled with busy cafes. But down another street you would hit a quiet area with less crowded cafes.

Staff: Office hours vary so let them know when you plan to check in or check out. The staff was friendly, they even supplied a map of Rome.

Room and Building --The room and bathroom, halls and main building were clean and tidy, no offensive smells. Quiet building, no loud parties or noisy tenants. Our room overlooked a busy cafe, but when the window or even the shutters were closed the noise was minimal.

The window opens to let in the breeze (it is a little tricky to use if you've never seen the dual windows that pop open at the top or you can close it and open it like a door). The lights in the room are bright, so if you like to read or need to look at maps in the room, you can. The bathroom is clean, as are the floors. The bed was comfortable -- good support but not too hard. I was in Rome with my partner and a friend. We stayed in the three person room, the small twin was a little soft, but not so bad that our friend couldn't sleep on it. Nor did it make her back hurt. So I count the beds as good.

I would recommend this to my family and friends. However, there are two things you should be aware of: Not all of the staff understand English (so if you don't speak Italian at least google some key phrases) and you need a secure pocket for your key ring -- You need a key for the main building door, one for the hall to your room, and one for your room itself - plus the key to the safe (if you use it). But the number of keys that it took to get in, made me feel comfortable enough to actually feel like my belongings were safe and I was safe. If I was travelling alone, I'd surely stay here.

Room Tip: Room V opens over a cafe. I liked it was awesome being able to hear the mellow music and rumble of t...

Maggiore Guest House is the perfect place to stay if you are a tourist with friends or family.
The location is great, VERY close to Termini Station, in a safe area, also in the famous St Maria Maggiore Piazza. The area is full of souvenir shops, a shop with very nice stuff for women, supermarket, pubs, restaurants, "gelateria" this is a caffeteria where they also serve the best ice cream, beer pubs and so on.
Felippe, the receptionist was very helpful, friendly and he gave us tips for visiting Rome and recommended to us places to eat.
There is NO BREAKFAST included, but for JUST €2 you can have a ticket from BB Maggiore which includes a drink (tea, coffee, milk, etc) and a sweet bakery product (very tasty!). You cand take this Italian type of breakfast at the nice caffeteria on the right side of the main door of the building where B&B Maggiore is.
All in all, it has all the facilities thay you would need. Fridge, wi-fi, a clean bathroom, spacious rooms, a safe box etc. and a quiet pleasant atmosphere.
I am strongly recommending it to couples, groups of friends, families and so on :)

Room Tip: Room 3 is just perfect in my opinion
