“Good value in the best part of Rome!”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

My niece stayed at this hotel last year and was very well looked after, so this year my partner and I chose to stay here on our way to and from Sicily. We particularly liked the room we were given on our second visit, which was accessed through the courtyard. A very comfy bed and a huge shower, which was much appreciated by my partner who finds it hard to fit into some of the 'capsule' type showers!

A very good breakfast was provided, which is of course most important, and the staff were ever helpful, kind and attentive. Trastevere is a great spot to base yourself in Rome too.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the courtyard are quieter

I chose Clarisse because it was in my price bracket, was in the area I wanted to stay and because of the reviews.
Three of us stayed in the room for 3 nights. We were not in the main hotel but in an adjoining wing. The room was approx 4 x 4 m and included en-suite shower room. The decor was minimal but showed the exposed brickwork off to its best advantage.
The negatives: The room overlooked the street and was a bit noisy - I had enquired about the room location before arriving and was told the room overlooks a quiet parking area (what they didn't say was this this was right off the busy main road!).
We had great difficulty in getting wi-fi to work - it was patchy at best.
We had a lovely shower head but it didn't work - the small head attachment was fine.
The positives: The bed was very comfortable with good mattress (my husband is 6'3" and has a bad back so this was very important).
It was very clean throughout.
The breakfast was well presented (juices, options for coffee, cerial, bread, pastries, cheese/meat and eggs were on offer).
The staff were very pleasant.
We loved wandering through the back streets of the district in the evening - lots of little shops and restaurants to choose from.
Sky TV was free and available in English (but the News channels only).
The hotel is very close to a bus and tram stop (No 8 -terminates at Vittorio Emanuele monument) or H bus from the Termini rail station. (Get off after the river crossing).

Room Tip: I would try to get a room in the main hotel area and not facing any road

Dear Mrs "Sarah P",
we are delighted that you fully enjoyed your recent stay at Relais Le Clarisse and we deeply thank you for your kind review and appreciation.

We are also sorry you found your room not quiet enough: as you may understand, location in the center of a metropolis may have some discomfort from this point of view even if we do our best in providing sound-proof double-glazed windows and very thick walls. We hope your appreciation of location and contest was enough to minimize this unease. Also: we always like to remind that our Staff is eager to help our Guests make their stay a memorable one, so please do not hesitate to let them know about any unsatisfaction you may have. If we know on time, we can do something!

We hope we will have the chance to host you again anytime in the future, so you can also try, as kindly requested, one of our rooms facing the quiet Mediterranean garden.

Our warmest regards

As a family of 4, we had 2 rooms, both were exceptionally clean and charming in different ways. Our bathroom had a huge multi-head shower. Kids room had exposed beams, high ceilings, step-down from courtyard with beautiful carved wood door. The location is perfect for foodies, as Trastavere is filled with fantastic restaurants and a beautiful basilica. The front desk was very helpful every time. Being across the Tiber River was not a detriment as the public transportation stop is a stones throw away, or you could easily walk across river and get to city center. The linens were clean, plentiful and replaced daily. A/C was great and much needed in the heat of August. Breakfast was good not great, but it got us going.
Would return in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: Ask for the room with the huge shower.

Average pricing, very clean. Excellent service. They let us use their phone for changing plane reservations and also made reservations for us. This is a safe bet, I was traveling with two adult kids who loved the area. It is fine if you are not going to be in your room that much.

We had three twin beds that were narrow but comfortable and enough room for our two nights.

Our room was located in a building a half block down the street from the reception area where there appear to be about 8 rooms in an old convent building. If your room is there, you have to unlock a huge door and there is no security into the building- just a hall with rooms. If you are travelling alone or not familiar with the area you might not be comfortable with this arrangement. It didn't feel unsafe because the interior is bright and clean, but not so sure if I were traveling alone or with just one other person. Very nice bathroom and great shower. Basic accomodations, beds, armoire, small desk, nothing fancy, but rooms have very high ceilings which I liked.

The standard Italian breakfast on a charming outdoor terrace was quiet good with great cappicino.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the courtyard as our rooms were facing the main street which can be noisy- alt...

This is a wonderfully located hotel in Trastevere, And deserving of it's good reviews for its location Away from the hustle and bustle of central Rome.

It's courtyard is wonderful and you wouldn't want to book a room elsewhere in the hotel.

That being said, there is a group of hotel reservation staff or government auditors who seem to use the courtyard as their personal outdoor office. They literally sit in the courtyard all day chain smoking, working on their computers, chatting on their phones and god knows what.. Which for a Hotel so few rooms seems so bizarre. If you are in your room you have to turn on your AC to drown them out. If you are in the courtyard, you can't escape their relentless banter. I can't imagine why they can't find a different place to work away from guests. I can't imagine why it takes three or four people to manage reservations for a hotel of so few rooms! Especially when they use an outside agency for bookings.

The courtyard is small and invariably they are directly outside someone's window or patio door! You basically have to ask them to leave from in front of your courtyard door ... Which to their credit they are very polite to do, but it seems they don't realize that people don't pay to hear work jibber jabber. There are between three or four of them at this all day long!

The front desk staff are indeed very polite and very helpful. The breakfast is far from elaborate but typical by most European standards. The in room amenities are spartan but room itself is comfortable.

Dear Mr “TheVancouverCanuck”,
first of all we deeply thank you for taking the time to share your experience at Relais Le Clarisse.

We are delighted that you could fully appreciate the location and other aspects of your stay, such as our Staff’s care and dedition.

Of course we can do nothing but deeply apologize for the inconveniences we might have caused to you by working in the garden during your stay. We do perfectly understand that it may not be a pleasure for our Guests, and of course we do have office areas, specifically dedicated to work. At this moment, though, those areas are being renovated and they are under reconstruction, due to some important changes and improvements we are about to do. I would like therefore to take the chance to announce that we are about to open an intimate, charming SPA for our Guests. This leaves us at the moment with no office to work in: please accept our apologies on this once again.

As for the need of such a “small” business to be run, we would just like to say that there is the hard work of a large team behind the results we manage to achieve every year. A Hotel is not only run by reservations, in fact.

Also, the people you saw at work, actually manage three business: Relais Le Clarisse (www.leclarisse.com) , Hotel Le Clarisse al Pantheon (www.leclarissehotel.com) and the newly opened restaurant “La Ciambella” (www.laciambellaroma.com).
As you can imagine this requires a lot of work to do. We promise, though, that should you give us a second chance in the future as we would greatly appreciate, you will not have such inconvenience anymore. Also: we would like to invite you when in Rome next time to try our relaxing SPA!

Our best wishes and thank you for choosing us,
The Management & Staff

We found this hotel for my wife's 60th anniversary and we invited my 3 sisters and their husbands.
We had an absolutely fantastic experience, from the welcome to our departure.
Everything was really, really good, the rooms, the breakfast, the garden, reception.
They arranged transfer from the airport, to the airport, when we needed to go somewhere to far to walk, helping with tickets to museums and good advice to restaurants.
And the Cappuccino in the morning prepared by the lovely - forgot her name - but heaven.
We stayed for 8 days on our first visit to Rome. We are coming back next year late September and we will not stay anywhere else than Relais Le Clarisse.
Something I almost forgot, the hotel doesn't have a restaurant, but there are hundreds of restaurants in Trastevere, so You won't need it.

Room Tip: Try to get a room overlooking the garden.

This is an old convent which architecturally beautiful but with a few issues:
- the rooms we stayed in were down the dark block from the main entrance.
- it was hard to maneuver around the poorly laid out room.
- there was a loud clanky door to enter this section of the hotel that would wake us up when people would enter or exit
- the front desk was not occupied during the night.
- wifi was not working when we were there
- breakfast was okay.

Dear Mrs "Lisalisala",
thank you for sharing the time to share your experience at Relais Le Clarisse dating back to last April.
We are glad you could fully appreciate breakfast variety and especially the ancient charme of the historical building we are located in. As you may imagine, this leads to very little changes we can do to the building's structure itself, so this is why to access our new wing of the Relais, where the Standard rooms are, and as a result of the History we lay on, we were not allowed to build a corridor or internal access.
As for the loud door, I am glad to inform you and the other readers that we have already solved this issue recently.
Relais Le Clarisse is not a Hotel: it is a Historical Relais. This means that a reception 24 hours service cannot be provided unfortunately. Reception is at your full disposal from 7:30 am until 10:00 pm as it is clearly written in any website and as we remind everyone at check-in time, and of course emergency numbers are always displayed. Luckily enough they never happened to be used in many years of activity.
Many Guests, as you can easily read in other reviews, are enthousiastic and surprised by our very strong and stable wi-fi signal in any room. I also remind to our Guests and kind readers that our wi-fi connection is completely free (unlike most Hotels). I am deeply sorry that while you were were apparently we had some technical issues with it: sometimes they cannot be prevented, they may just happen anywhere.
I truly hope you will feel like wanting to give Relais Le Clarisse another chance of positively surprising you in the future, should you ver come back to Trastevere.
Warm regards
