I have stayed at Al Viminale Hill Inn & Hotel twice, recently being the second time and again was not disappointed. One of the biggest draw cards was the price of this hotel which was significantly less than surrounding ones. The primary reason for this is probably because this is more of a basic style hotel. While the rooms are nicely appointed and bathrooms are very modern, the hotel does not have the scope of service that other larger hotels do.
We stayed in room 108 - the bed was very comfortable, great air-conditioning (a must-have for hot Rome), and very clean. A bit of a tight squeeze for 2 travelers with luggage, but the bay windows provided some space to store our suitcases on the floor. The bathroom, while very modern was also quite small, it's main feature being the chroma-therapy shower which while a bit of a novelty, was a very tight squeeze (an average build male).
Location of the hotel was quite good - a very short walk from Termini train station, also a very short walk to both Termini and Repubblica Metro stations (a couple of minutes). You can take the metro from either of these stations to all the major sights of Rome. Open top busses can also be caught from termini - choose carefully as they vary in quality and frequency. We found we could walk to a number of the major sights also in about 20 mins.
The hotel did advertise in the foyer that they can provide breakfast at a cost, but we did not take advantage of this. Wifi was also available in rooms - but again was not free.
To conclude - for location and cost, you can't go wrong with this basic but clean hotel.
TIP - do not eat breakfast or even buy coffee in the area surrounding the hotel (crap, tourist-trap food with inflated prices). If you must have a morning coffee, first thing - walk to Repubblica where you can expect the price of coffee to almost half. For food, get out of the Termini area.

I spent the Easter weekend (2012) at the Al Viminale Hill Inn & Hotel - first of all, for the record, hotels in Rome during Easter are (not surprisingly) very expensive. However, the Al Viminale was a fantastic find, considering the time of year and the location of the hotel.

I went to Rome with a girlfriend, and the purpose of our trip was to see the sights and get some shopping done - while avoiding the Vatican, as we wanted to avoid the huge crowds. The location of the Al Viminale is fantastic, as we were able to walk absolutely everywhere. We saw all of the major sights within two days, and spent one day shopping, and although our feet did hurt quite a bit in the evenings, walking is a must in Rome. The good was, as expected, fantastic. Both of us are major fans of Italian food, so naturally we were in heaven!

As for timing, since it was Easter, Rome was naturally full of tourists. This didn't bother us, though, as all of the capital cities in Europe are always full of tourists anyway. The shops were open well enough and we didn't have any problems with finding great restaurants or excellent shopping.

As for the Al Viminale, that really is a fantastic hotel. As many of the other hotels in Rome, this hotel takes up only a part of the apartment where it is located. We always felt very secure, as the outside door is always locked. The people at the reception desk were always very helpful and checking-in and -out was a breeze. The elevator really is an interesting experience, but it worked without any problems - despite it's obviously old age! Our room was very clean and the bathroom was very modern. The shower was an interesting addition, with its different lighting and water feature options. However, I did notice that the shower seemed to be almost air-tight, so while taking a hot shower, it often felt like there wasn't enough air to breathe. I often ended up opening the shower door a bit to avoid suffocating, but then the water did flood the floor. That was a minor detail though, the bathroom was quite exquisite! As an additional note, we did need to make a very odd request to the hotel after booking: while looking through the hotel photos, we noticed that at least one room had the shower inside the hotel room, and not in the bathroom. As we were two friends traveling together, we didn't want to shower in front of each other so we requested to have a room with the shower in the bathroom.

As for the room itself, there were large closets next to the beds, which were great for putting all of our stuff in. The safe worked well and the mini-fridge was alright. We also decided to make use of the hotel's airport pick-up service, and actually ended up also scheduling the driver to take us back to the airport as well. It really was wonderful to have the driver waiting for us at the airport and not have to worry about taxis. The price of the pick-up was also very reasonable, almost the same price as what a taxi would've cost.

All in all, I would definitely recommend the hotel!

Room Tip: Our room was facing the opera house, which we did request for. We didn't have any problems with...

After reading so many great reviews, and finding that this hotel also had a great value, I booked it for my week in Rome.

The hotel has a very discreet entrance right across the street from the opera house. I had to use the intercom to get in. No problem with that. Emiliano was incredibly service minded and helpful, without being "too much".

I stayed in a single room, 504, on the fifth floor. Not very big, but not very small either. The room was in great shape and had an air condition unit that looked brand new, and worked amazingly well. The shower cabin was also a real surprise. It had loads of features, and you could even change the color of the light ;) Loved it! Another great feature was the 42" TV with DVD player. Never seen that before in a hotel! A good thing to know is that you have to ask for the DVD remote down in the reception.

Please note that the doors (at least to my room) seem to be very poorly sound proofed. It's almost as having no door at all, meaning that noise easily gets in (and out). In the corridor outside the rooms there is an area for socializing, and when there are people there you can easily be disturbed. Also, the cleaning staff woke me up almost every morning when cleaning the corridor. With that said, I didn't find this a very big matter. I still got my hours of sleep.

The location of the hotel is, in my opinion, very good. Yes, you have to walk some 15-20 minutes to get to Colosseum and such, but hey, that isn't to much is it? The street is very calm, yet just a couple of hundred meters from Via Nazionale, one of the biggest streets with lots of shops and restaurants.

My final opinion is that Al Viminale is a total joy to stay at. I have never seen such service minded staff in another hotel. I could even keep my mountainbike at the hotel, without hesitation. It saved me a lot of trouble. Don't forget that this is a three star hotel, meaning that you cannot expect everything to be the best, but considering the three stars and the amazing service and value I warmly recommend this hotel, and would definitely consider staying here again.

Without doubt Al Viminale Hill in Rome is the best hotel we’ve ever stayed in. Marco and Emiliano are the perfect hosts, making this little gem home away from home.
The rooms are beautifully modern and ultra clean. There is free wifi and free pizza dinner, if you book trough the official web-site.
The hotel is in a great location and view opposite Opera House close to the major attraction. There are great transport links but we walked everywhere pretty much. It’s a nice walk to Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps and close to the metro for travelling to the Vatican.
Emiliano and Marco recommended the best places to see and good places to eat and drink around Rome. Emiliano marked up a map for us which was our trusted guide for the weekend. We ate in many of the recommended restaurants and all were fantastic ).
Al Viminale Hill in Rome, Emiliano and Marco made our trip to Rome unforgettable and if we ever return to Rome we won’t stay anywhere else! I wish there was Al Viminale Hill everywhere we wanted to go on holiday!

Very good location close to all the sightseeings..overal I would say its a nice hotel. Room was big enough and had airco. Bathroom was very modern and shower was good and very clean..The bed was comfortable and the sheets were nice. Only thing is they use a old school elevator which needs an update! But it looks very caracterisitc for Rome. Don't expect 24 hour reception, and no lobby.

We had a great stay in this hotel. We arrived very tired from a long hrs trip. We were relieved after we are welcomed by the staff at the front desk. Marco helped us bring our luggage into the room, and gave us assistance whenever we needed. Receptionists Marco and Emiliano are there to give advice about the city, information and recommendations where to go. The old school lift added a nice touch to the hotel. It was like another experience using the transparent old fashioned lift. Rooms are very clean, comfortable and noise proof windows didn’t allow us to hear the noise outside. We had the room with the view to the Opera and it was very nice! We were relaxed seeing the streets from a high view. There is a common area, self service area where we can prepare our coffee and tea anytime for free! Don’t miss the shower with the cromotherapy and hydromassage! High tech services such as wide HD tv screen, dvd player, electronic safe box, mini frigo bar, aircondition etc. Booking directly from the website gave us the opportunity to find best rates, avail free services like wi-fi connection, local calls, dvd, even the luggage room, etc. Location is perfect. Walking distance to all of the major spots in Rome. Major metro lines are reachable within 3 minutes! Nothing more we could ask for! After a whole day discovering Rome, we couldn’t wait to return to the hotel! We definitely recommend this hotel! And surely we shall return.
