Owner description: Conceived as a broad cultural campus, MAXXI is managed by a Foundation constituted in the July of 2009 by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities. The programming of the activities - exhibitions, workshops, conferences, shows, projections, educational projects - reflects MAXXI's vocation as a place for the conservation and exhibition of its collections but also, and above all, a laboratory for cultural experimentation and innovation, for the study, research and production of the aesthetic contents of out time. The MAXXI building is a major architectural work designed by Zaha Hadid, located in Rome's Flaminio quarter and featuring innovative and spectacular forms.

The museum is less impressive than expected.
Modern art museums in other big cities are much more impressive and diverse.
Doesn't worth the effort of getting there and away.

Looks like a prisoncamp with metal fence all around.
I expected to find at least a nice piece of architecture, but the building does not even look like the pictures on their webside.
Opens only at 11 h, but I did not wait until then and visit a real museum in Rome.

The experience of a place like this is always going to be a bit pot luck, depending on the particular exhibitions. We were fortunate - lots of hits as well as some misses. The building is quite impressive but could actually be plonked in any city suburb - it didn't resonate as Roman or Italian to me. The buffet lunch was quite good - quite a lot of choice, even for vegetarians. A bit pricey - probably similar to what we'd pay in a restaurant for lunch, but good choices.

Important point - our guidebook (new!) and some websites say that they have a Nintendo based treasure hunt for children based on the current exhibitions at any time. They don't any more. One highly disappointed member of the family. And his Dad.

Go and just see the building itself! What a place. Really enjoyed the architecture. Went second time just for coffee - sat outside and meditated the peaceful surroundings.

The grounds of the museum were a great place to spend a Sunday in the sum, even if you do not want to visit the museum.
