Owner description: Conceived as a broad cultural campus, MAXXI is managed by a Foundation constituted in the July of 2009 by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities. The programming of the activities - exhibitions, workshops, conferences, shows, projections, educational projects - reflects MAXXI's vocation as a place for the conservation and exhibition of its collections but also, and above all, a laboratory for cultural experimentation and innovation, for the study, research and production of the aesthetic contents of out time. The MAXXI building is a major architectural work designed by Zaha Hadid, located in Rome's Flaminio quarter and featuring innovative and spectacular forms.

The experience of a place like this is always going to be a bit pot luck, depending on the particular exhibitions. We were fortunate - lots of hits as well as some misses. The building is quite impressive but could actually be plonked in any city suburb - it didn't resonate as Roman or Italian to me. The buffet lunch was quite good - quite a lot of choice, even for vegetarians. A bit pricey - probably similar to what we'd pay in a restaurant for lunch, but good choices.

Important point - our guidebook (new!) and some websites say that they have a Nintendo based treasure hunt for children based on the current exhibitions at any time. They don't any more. One highly disappointed member of the family. And his Dad.

Go and just see the building itself! What a place. Really enjoyed the architecture. Went second time just for coffee - sat outside and meditated the peaceful surroundings.

The grounds of the museum were a great place to spend a Sunday in the sum, even if you do not want to visit the museum.

Set a bit out of the city it is a dramatic design set in an old barracks.
The sense of space is very effective and with a good restaurant and bar it merits a half a day at least. Complete contrast to the historic Rome

A place you have to visit in Rome to amdire the unique building designed by Zaha Hadid. Very interesting works of contemporary art. Try the tram from piazza del popollo
