Owner description: Conceived as a broad cultural campus, MAXXI is managed by a Foundation constituted in the July of 2009 by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and headed by Giovanna Melandri. From December 2013 Hou Hanru is the Artistic Director of the museum, which includes MAXXI Architecture, directed by Margherita Guccione, and MAXXI Art, directed by Anna Mattirolo. The programming of the activities - exhibitions, workshops, conferences, shows, projections, educational projects - reflects MAXXI's vocation as a place for the conservation and exhibition of its collections but also, and above all, a laboratory for cultural experimentation and innovation, for the study, research and production of the aesthetic contents of out time. The MAXXI building is a major architectural work designed by Zaha Hadid, located in Rome's Flaminio quarter and featuring innovative and spectacular forms.

After you are done with all of the antiquities, you might be in the mood for something on the cutting edge.
This new contemporary art museum designed by Zara Hadid really is a blast of the avante in this ancient city.

“A Tyranical Piece of Architecture”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2013

Get to Maxxi just before 11.00. Gaze at the massive concrete wall and the high metal railing, security cameras and wait for the doors to open and be aware you are in the presence of one of the most unpleasant buildings in Europe.
Wander the atrium ,but do not buy a ticket as you will regret it unless of course you are an architect with an inflated ego and no sense of community and place .

“Museum that is the exhibit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2013

If you want some respite from the classical architecture of Rome then this museum will provide it. The building is an extraordinary creation with sweeping interiors and intriguing use of space. The exhibits were a bit unusual which is what you'd expect at a museum of the 21st century. Good little cafe with reasonable prices.

“go for the buiding, not for the exhibitions”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2013

the buiding is a architectural landmark, but the quality of the presented exhibitions is poor. Go there by tramway from Piazza del Popolo, have a drink, and take pictures from outside. That's it...

“For museum lovers”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2013

This museum is outside the center of Rome, a taxi from Place D'Espagne cost about 8 euro. The building is very interesting, and some of the exhibits were quite thought provoking, such as "Disorient." The staff was friendly and the information desk people spoke great English and answered all our questions.
