Hotel Sallustio
Ranked #985 of 1,272 Hotels in Rome
Reviewed August 4, 2012 via mobile

The hotel itself is weird as the hotel sallustio shares the building with 2 or 3 other hotels with each hotel being on a different floor. From what I could tell - the hotel sallustio occupys floors 3 and 6 of the building. The lift can take only 3 people and there is only one lift servicing the building. It's rather slow but serviceable especially as we were on the 6th floor. The main areas of the hotel are shabby and in varying degrees of cleanliness probably due to the fact the common areas are not necessarily owned by the hotel. The button to call the lift was hanging off of the wall! But once you enter your room it is totally different! Small rooms but 100% clean and modern. Bed was comfortable and we slept well. Working air conditioning which was welcome in July! Bathroom only had a shower but we prefer this but to be honest the water was very cold all weekend. This may be because we were on the 6th floor and all the lower floors were using all the hot water - try and get a room on lower floors if you like your showers hot! The view was negligible - nothing worth looking at but plenty to see in Rome so why stay in your room for a view!!
The staff in lobby are helpful and upon asking provided a street map and noted the nearest bus stops, what the bus numbers were and drew where they went. They also called taxi's for us when needed.
It is in a good location. €7 euro taxi ride to Spanish steps and coliseum areas. 6 minute walk to the termini to get the bus to the airport and to find the tourist buses. We recommend the Roma Christina tourist buses as they are the only ones which have roof's to offer shelter from the sun in summer while still offering unrestricted views of the sights for taking photos plus they offered one of our party free 48hour ticket!!
There is a restaurant right next door to the hotel. Open until the last client goes home! Food was lovely and reasonably priced by Rome standards. We asked for rum and coke and they had no rum so the owner went and brought some rum!! Excellent service. Be warned all food in Rome is good but the price can vary so be careful where you eat. A can of coke can cost as much as €5.00.
Overall we only paid £200 for 3 night break including flights so the hotel offered excellent value for money. The breakfast was included and was typical continental breakfast but always fresh and plentiful and clean. The location was also good. I tend to view city accommodation as a crash pad only and am perfectly happy with no frills and a little rough around the edges but depending on your individual expectations the hotel sallustio may not be for you. Happy holidays.

We booked this hotel because of the location, and that was the only good thing about it. The person at reception was no help at all (couldn't answer any of our questions), and when we entered the room there was a very foul smell. We had to open the window to air it out. The double bed was 2 separate single beds (not uncommon in Italy), but they pulled apart when sleeping. One of us actually fell through the crack in the middle of the night. Would NOT stay here again.

Our room was on the top floor with a balcony. Breakfast was wonderful. There is a nice little coffee shop about two streets down, the owner was wonderful. If you like 4 star in America stay somewhere else, but if you are looking for a good deal, this one is for you. We stayed 4 nights. The only thing bad I could say is the smell comes from the sewer because there is no S traps. We just put towels over the drains. Other than that, wonderful. Some good tips... stay off the subway. Do just pay the 40 Euro for a taxi to your hotel from the airport. Do get the Roma pass lines are very long otherwise. Do get Vatican resevations online as well. Walk two streets over and take the bus #62 it will take you anywhere you want to go for tourist sites. WE loved it and are planning to go back.

Room Tip: Call after you book and request top floor with a balcony it was wonderful! Rooms are large and hav...

The pictures are deceiving. When we arrived we were told we'd have to switch rooms the second night. The rooms we were in the first night were clean, remodeled and very nice...those are the ones pictured under Hotel Sallustio. The room we were moved to was a different story! They were filthy; dirty walls, dusty "wood" floors, TINY and dirty showers that you couldn't even bend over in or get out from under the water because there wasn't room to move! After feeling a little warm, we were informed that the A/C units are not turned on until June. Hey, how about bunk beds?! Yes, bunk beds as the extra ones in a triple room.
Apparently we weren't the only ones unhappy, we heard others in the lobby complaining about dirty bedding and dirty rooms. The owner was unfriendly and didn't want to hear your problems.
We found out that this hotel is actually four different ones owned by different family members,
probably the reason for the inconsistencies.
I wouldn't recommend this to anyone!

This hotel was booked through a travel agents in Italy. The man said he'd sent people there before, which I very much doubt.

The reception area is very scruffy and dirty. We should have realized that the rest of the hotel would follow suit.

We only had two nights there. When we arrived the room was not ready even though reception said we could go in. A man was cleaning the room, not very well, there was still dirt on the floor after he left. The only positive point was, we noticed he’d changed the sheets. The room is a good size but again scruffy and gave the impression of being dirty. The bathroom is small and grubby looking, the shower head fell off the wall and they didn’t bother to fix it.

We told reception we weren’t happy with the room but there were an Italian couple waiting to change there’s too and like they said ‘you may get ours and we will get yours’, so we stuck it out for another night.

Anyway, it’s certainly not like the website pictures and should be avoided. The whole building is full of small hotels, it’s a mess to say the least.

The location is good, so check out other hotels along that road or in that area. The buses are very close by and you can walk to the train station.
