How this place isn't no. 1 in Rome is beyond me. Pallatial opulent rooms, fantastic service, incredible breakfast. We loved it so much we're heading back for our honeymoon.

We haven't found 'the' hotel in Rome yet. We enjoyed the hotel but due to the reviews, we thought it was going to be amazing. The suite was large- which is unusual for Rome- so that was a plus. The location is a bit off the beat and path which is nice and it's in a really pretty neighborhood and easy to get everywhere. The bathroom could use an update. The service is understated and friendly but not amazing. There were little things that were annoying for a 5-star place: they didn't replace amenities, one night they forgot to do turn down (and replace towels so I had to go get one in the am), checking email is a pain because the laptops aren't usually available (I had my IPhone and the wireless worked great but sometimes you need a keyboard to type long emails)...little things but things that stick out when you compare them to other 5-star places. I would absolutely go back and for the most part I enjoyed it but we are still searching for that Rome hotel that we love.

Room Tip: The suite was two connecting rooms that were good sized and comfortable.

This lovely hotel is located in an elegant tree-lined smart part of town. It is a huge spacious town house with its own garden. For such a massive house, there are only twelve rooms but plenty of large dignified reception rooms downstairs filled with antiques, rugs and important looking paintings. Our room was large, friendly and with the most comfortable bed - not state of the art but solid and traditional. The marble bathroom was enormous, modern and glamorous which was kept scrupulously clean by the household staff, who we never saw. Breakfasts were such a pleasant experience with top quality food in a lovely calm atmosphere and delightful unobtrusive staff. The spa downstairs was pretty glam too - offering every treatment known to man. I would say this hotel was one of the best we have stayed in - and we are very picky!

Stayed here in the summer of 2011, after searching for a centrally located place to stay in Rome. For reference, the parameters were central, with enough room for a family and a nanny. We ended using the Apartment and one room in the main building. The wonderful things included the courteous and attentive staff, the morning breakfast in the dining room, the beautiful public spaces (as a converted mansion, it's as if you are staying in the home of a Rich, VERY RICH, Italian friend--there is a richness and authenticity to the spaces which is remarkable), the very, very secure neighborhood, blissfully powerfully air conditioning and the walking distance to Trevi, Parthenon, etc...(remember, you walk a lot more Europe and it's good for you!).

The apartment is not in the main building; it's in a building about 100 feet away, which contains business offices and whatnot (must have also been owned by the same rich family)--and on a high floor. It has a full kitchen, a living room and two bedrooms and two baths. The one bedroom has two twin beds and the other a king. The mattresses are firm and the housekeeping immaculate (no room service in the Apartment, however; and the WiFi never worked correctly while we there).

One cautionary note to ANY visitor to Rome who plans on sleeping at night at any point before 2-3 AM---It's a loud City (you knew that) and the primary offender is the sputtering cavalcade of scooters that carry young and old alike to and fro through the City. This means that even in the private rented apartments of apparently wealthy Romans---there's noise at night from the street. Earplugs are your friend. Nanny reported that the main hotel's bedrooms had the same issue. Of course, if we had been going out until 3:00 am ourselves (with the 4 and 7 year old, hmmm, is this a bad idea?), we would have never noticed....

Also, although I would stay in the Apartment again with children, I am not sure that the main hotel building would be a good fit---far, far too many antiques of ancient (and expensive) provenance left casually on the walls and whatnot that could be nerve-wracking.

For a couple with means---I think this would be delightful place to stay again.

Room Tip: The rentable "Apartment" in a separate building is actually a 2 BR, 2 BA, 6 room total apa...

Our travel agent was going to put us up in a large, commercialized hotel during our honeymoon in Italy/Rome. I had asked them to change us into a hotel that had more "Italian history and charm" and they hit the nail on the head! The Villa Spalletti Trivelli is an absolute hidden GEM in the heart of Rome (~5 minute walk from the Trevi Fountain, ~10 minutes to the Spanish Steps). This used to be the private residence of the last queen's first lady in waiting. In 2003 they renovated the entire house into a 12 bedroom hotel and it is spectacular!!! - the rooms were very much preserved in their original form (original pictures of the queen/family, furniture, art, tapestries) but still has the comforts and luxuries of a 5-star hotel. We happened to be in Rome during the recent protests and although there were blaring sirens and helicopters sounding off outside, we were able to retreat to our EXTREMELY QUIET room and take a much needed nap! The staff at the hotel is very accommodating and knowledgeable of what to do/where to eat in Rome that are not tourist traps. Also, there is a roof top balcony in which to go watch the sunset at night and enjoy a glass of wine!!...

Such a WONDERFUL and romantic hotel - most of the locals have no idea where it is and that's part of the ambiance! We can't wait to come back for our next trip!

Nestled away in the heart of Rome, moments from the romantic Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, is the Villa Spalletti Trivelli. We visited the Villa for the last two nights of our honeymoon in Italy. As soon as we arrived, we knew it wouldn’t be long enough. At the first opportunity, we went to toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain to ensure our return.

The villa was once a family home and is crammed with Spalletti Trivelli family heirlooms. The wood paneling and fireplaces give an air of grand aristocracy but the friendly, if formal, service ensured a very comfortable stay. Beautiful gardens where you are invited to enjoy your meals or drinks, a lovely breakfast and dining room and a drawing room with a fully-stocked complimentary honesty bar. If you tire of taking in the many sights of Rome, the spa at the villa offers welcome respite. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and even after checking out, we were still offered afternoon tea and the use of the beautiful spa changing facilities whilst we waited for our transport.

The room we stayed in (a romantic double) was comfortable with all the ameneties you would expect from a 5-start hotel, plus beautiful views of the surrounding gardens.

For the average travellers like us, at €360 per night the Villa Spalletti Trivelli is expensive. But well worth every penny as the memory will remain with you for life.

We stayed at Villa Spalletti Trivelli last September and again returned in May. The villa is beautiful. The rooms are immaculate and very comfortable. The staff at the villa are very accommodating. When we needed taxi service to the airport or directions, they were there to help. The breakfast is delicious with a variety of foods. My husband and I enjoyed are stays at the Villa tremendously. The villa is out of the main city and our room was a quiet retreat after a long day of sightseeing.

Room Tip: The two rooms that we stayed in were immaculate. I do not think there are any "bad" rooms
