“Absolutely awful location but good on-site facilities”
Reviewed September 10, 2012

I stayed here for 4 nights with my two friends and having read the reviews and the website we were expecting a great campsite in a fantastic location within easy reach of Rome. Needless to say we were slightly surprised that it took us over an hour to get from Rome station (Termini) to the campsite! In fact, the campsite is a fair way outside of Rome, right next to a very busy main road. This meant the campsite was very noisy but at the same time very isolated. There was no way we could have gone anywhere other than the restaurant on site for dinner because the buses stopped running at 8.30pm.

The restaurant itself was alright but for the prices you pay the pasta dishes were all pretty disappointing. The pizzas were absolutely amazing though and definitely home made. The supermarket on site was great and the croissants were an excellent breakfast option.

We stayed in a bungalow which was very basic but perfectly nice. Apart from the fact that the bunk bed (probably added to accommodate a third person) was so high up that it was impossible to sit up in it even for someone who is only 5'2"! The matresses weren't that comfortable either and we all had backache by the end of our stay.

The pool was lovely even though it rained for most of our stay there. The music was at a good volume so it was still possible to read your book without being distracted if you wanted. The whole atmosphere at the campsite was really fun and all the staff (especially at the info point) seemed friendly and helpful. The day trip to Pompeii was also excellent and probably the highlight of our stay here.

We spent 9 nights at Camping Fabulous with our 2 children aged 8 and 5. We booked with Canvas and the reps were friendly and helpful. The site is large, the pools are great especially for younger children as one is only knee deep with fun slides. It had a shelved edge all the way round so you could cool off whilst sunbathing at the edge. There were always enough sunbeds although we were there for the latter part of August so perhaps it was a little quieter. We were thankful for air conditioning although our mobile home was not under the shade of the pine trees so it was more necessary. The kids loved the go-karts but we needed to get to the info point early to hire them as they were so popular. We felt totally safe with our kids riding off on them around the site. Rome was fantastic...a previous reviewer mentioned the need to take passports of children to the Colosseum to avoid them having to pay - we didn't and it was fine although I had to flash some id (driving licence) to prove we are from EU. Kids travel for free (I think under 10) on the public transport which makes the trip into Rome really cheap. We went to Hydromania one day but on public transport it takes a LONG time considering it is only 20 minutes by car from the site - it was a good, fun day out though...great slides. Rome by night was a great intro to Rome for both us and the kids and was just the right length and content but it is more of an overview. Would recommend this site and Canvas Holidays!

We have just returned from a 5 night stay at this campsite and had a really great holiday. The accommodation at the site is a little small, but comfortable and the air con was a real plus. The swimming pool on site is one of the sites best assets - our 8 year old son spent most of the holiday in it - it's really safe - because it's shallow, made of a rubbery material so no slipping and the slides are like slopes they slide down (so you cannot fall off) perfect. The restaurant on site serves really nice food and it well priced. Service perfect - the front of house man is a bit miserable but the waitress make up for it. Hubby said best steak he has EVER eaten.Only down points - evening entertainment poor and site too far from anyway to go in the evenings - but we enjoyed playing pin/pong and watching beach volley. The supermarket on site is very small and not much choice - but bakery is good get there early in the morning or they run out. Main supermarket 15 min walk away (each way) not good in 34 degree heat - saw some campers wheeled little suitcase trolleys to get their stuff which I thought was a gr8 idea.
Getting into Rome centre really easy - 5 mins on buses short walk from site to Eur Fermi metro station about 6 stops (10 mins) and you are in the centre. We came back once at about 9:45 and have to say that the EUR Fermi metro station area was really badly lit, loads of teenages hanging around and we both said won't like to be there on our own any later in the night. IF YOU HAVE KIDS UNDER 12 REMEMBER TO TAKE THEIR PASSPORT AS ALL EU CHILDREN UNDER 12 HAVE FREE ENTRANCE INTO THE COLOSSEUM- BUT YOU MUST PROVE BY PASSPORT THEY ARE PART OF THE EU, we didn't know and had to pay 12 euros.

We've just returned from a 2 week holiday at Camping Fabulous & had a fab time. We have 4 children (3 boys aged 12, 9 & 7 plus a girl aged 5).

We've never been on one of these holidays before so we were unsure what to expect but needn't have worried. We stayed in a maxi tent with Canvas Holidays & this was great for us (we are seasoned campers in UK & have camped in torrential conditions!) as the weather made the camping experience a dream. Lovely to get to a campsite and its all ready for you! The beds were very comfortable too. We did bring our own linen, towels etc as it worked out cheaper to book 2 suitcases into hold then to hire from Canvas for the 2 weeks.
The toilet/shower block was very clean & had big launderette style washing machines which were 4 euros for a wash. Great area for washing dishes too & my little girl loved the kids shower/toilet area. There were also sinks for hand washing clothes which was handy too.

A few tips & hints:
Remember your loo roll (the main toilets on site did not provide any, apart from pool toilets
None of the sinks had plugs(!)
Shower earlier rather than later as the hot water won't be hot if you shower at 10pm
All the children want to rent the on-site go-karts so if you want to do this then get to the info office early (7.30ish!) & get in line as they only have a few
The toilet/shower block floor get very slippy so be careful as I nearly came a cropper a few times on a hard tiled floor
Take mosquito repellent, citronella candles, bite relief etc as we were all bitten quite badly
If you want a quiet time round the pool then this is not the place for you-its busy with kids, busy with the animation dancing team & music is usually always playing BUT you do get used to this

Best Bits:
The weather-it was scorchio!!
The ice cream parlour-delicious & cheap (my fav were fragola, limone & yogurt)
The staff-all very helpful
The animation team-aqua aerobics, twice a day.(Initially you feel a bit of an idiot but not when 60 other people are doing it!), the mini disco was fab too. The team have a set of dances which they perform EVERY night & at the pool side. If your kids are into dancing then they will love this & all the songs are Italian pop songs which are very catchy!
The pools are great with lots of loungers & parasols plus my children are happy to go off & play-the play pool is very safe & has a rubber flooring. The slides are good fun too.
Rome is an amazing city-easy to get into via public transport too but its hot hot hot-the energy sapping type of hot so we planned our trips (we went 4 times for a maximum of 3 hours each visit). We did Vatican, Trevi, Piazza Novona, Spanish Steps, Borghese Gardens, Colloseum, Pallatine etc etc-all magnificent. These trips are also good to break up pool days as I, personally, couldn't have stayed at the pool for 14 days as it would drive you insane to hear 'Your Friends' too many times!!
The pool was open 9am til 8pm and then changed to 10am-7pm which gave you ample time.
Lovely safe site too, you have security wristbands to wear & at night they have a security officer patrolling. We never saw any bad behaviour.

Canvas were great & very helpful, you usually have to leave your accommodation at 10am but as no-one was going into our tent we could stay all day at no extra cost. If you are interested in going with Canvas then keep an eye on deals etc, we paid the rate with 40% off. The initial cost was £1200, which (after staying) is not worth that money. Also, at Fabulous, Canvas only have 8 tents which are pitched in the same area-this was actually great as all the children played together & we met some lovely people. My eldest son made friends with lots of Dutch teenagers who spoke excellent English & he played on the beach volleyball court every night with them.

My children said it was the best holiday that they had ever been on (lets not mention the v delayed flight which meant we arrived home at 4am!).All in all, it was much much better then we expected & we will be trying a Venice site next year.

The campsite is quite far from the City, which is actually perfect for the Italian summer because it is away from the heat, but very easy to commute. The site is in a 'nature park' - so almost completely in the shade of the trees, but with open sun over the pool area and sun beds.

Our family, on a low budget, had a great time once we figured out the public transport (too dangerous to drive and very expensive taxis!), which didn't take us long. Most of the sites in Rome are open late, which meant no travelling into the city until it was cooler, and the pool was fantastic - very well designed for sunbathers and kids alike.

The food, ice cream and cocktail venues in Camping Fabulous are all amazing - better than most of the restaurants we went to in Rome.

My advice? Take high-factor suncream and an Italian phrasebook with you! The Italians in Rome are very friendly to English people but most only speak a few words, including the First Aiders. However, the Info Point staff on-site are fantastic and will tell you everything you need to know.

Visited Camping Fabulous in August for 12 days. It's a good campsite with good public transport into Rome. English is widely spoken on site and the facilities are good.
The major drawback in early August is that the pools tend to be packed and are the centre of a lot of activities organised by the campsite. There are only two pools so if one of them is taken up with dance activities, it limits availability. Also, the waterslides on this parc are very small.
The onsite shop can be quite expensive.
