“Wonderful Family Hotel”
Reviewed March 25, 2009

Just arrived back from spending 4 nights at the Hotel Golden, It was like staying with family. The Hotel is clean and the rooms spacious. The breakfast room was quite small but perfectly adequate for its purpose. We used the transfer facility and it worked like a dream . The Hotel is situated in a good part of town and we were able to walk to all tourist attractions. We used the "Little Tomato" restaurant and The San Marco Restaurant which was reccommended by the hotel, these were excellent. We also discovered a small bar/ restaurant called Lotties in a side street by the Hotel, this was handy for a drink or coffee before returning to the Hotel. All in all a great Hotel and excellent value for money. There is no getting away from it Rome is expensive but then so is most of Europe.

What a pleasure it is to write a review for the Hotel Golden. My daughter and I stayed there recently and had a great experience. The hotel shares a building with other establishments (a common occurrence for urban hotels in Italy) on a small, quiet street in a prime area of Rome, just off the Via Veneto and near the Villa Borghese. Because we were staying for just one night and on a dollar-based (rather than euro-based) budget, we booked the small double room. Yes, it was small, but so is a diamond, and like one, the room was sparkling and beautiful. There were elegant curtains and bedspreads, an extra pillow in the closet, a nice little refrigerator, television with international cable stations, and free internet which we could access on our laptops. The bathroom was very well appointed with a big shower (this is rare in a three-star hotel in Italy) and wonderful water pressure. Moreover, it and the room were in absolutely first-rate condition, not just immaculately clean, but well-designed, beautifully tiled and equipped with fine fixtures. The breakfast room was tucked into a small, bright space, where the tables were decorated with elegant tablecloths and lovely dishes. Breakfast to me is primarily coffee, and the Hotel Golden’s was very good. There were also various kinds of bread, croissants, jams, cheeses, meats, fruit and cereal, all very nicely displayed. The Hotel Golden is a family-owned business, with family members running the front desk and the other services. They do so in the most professional manner, while at the same time treating you like guests in their home, rather than simply customers. For example, they remembered my name, anticipated several of our needs, and were more than happy to answer questions about Rome and places we might see during our brief visit. As a result of all this, as soon as we returned to our temporary home on the Adriatic, I booked another stay at the Holden Golden for later this spring, and we are eagerly looking forward to it!

We are very satisfied with this hotel: it is clean, conveniently located with helpful staff. You can walk to Villa Borghese, Spanish Steps, and even to Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, and beyond; to Pantheon is about 25-minute walk. The metro station is quite near at Spanish Steps, so we generally take metro to the Forum, Vatican, and other churches as well as Ostia. The breakfast is ok-simple but sufficient.

There are a few restaurants not far from the hotel, serving good dinners. But in Italy, they often add charges in the restaurant bills for items that we didn't order, for example breads and cover charges-a few Euros here and there.

For Vatican tour, we direcly booked from Vatican; it was an excellent decision-no lineup with excellent tour guide and lower cost.

Beware of Angel Tour: our trip to the Forum was ruined. After confirmation through emails, they just didn't show up. When we complained, they put a blame on us that we were probably not tourists, but we were their competitors to smear their reputation. Their mentalities are strange and extremely not professional.

You may need to join a tour bus from Rome to Pompeii if you are going there. Because the local train from Naples to Pompeii ( you need to transfer in Naples station if you are going to Pompeii from Rome) is rather uncomfortable and scary; many vagabonds and mean looking fellows stared conspicuously at you or your girlfriend or your wife; on our return trip, one guy even provocatively kicked his shoe to my wife's foot and spoke something in Italian. But when we finally couldn't tolerate him anymore and spoke to him in English, he went away and continued ranting. Do watch out if you travel with teenage daughters; Italian men like to flirt aggressively; they may not be mean but can be quite annoying.
Naple area seems quite forbidding.

Gelatos and tiramitsus are generally great. Enjoy but be alert, because we visited during off-peak season; perhaps summer is a lot safer with more tourists, but you have other inconveniences.

We stayed here at the end of February 2009 and had an excellent time in Rome - partly due to how great the service was at the hotel golden!

The room was very small however we knew this when we booked it. Even though it was small it was perfect for us, it was kept very clean, had a small but modern bathroom, was very secure and we heard no noise and slept well the entire weekend!

The staff were amazing, and please do (unlike us on our first night) listen to their recommendations on where to eat - they recommend some great places, packed with locals so you know it must be good! When we first got their they gave us a map and pointed out all the attractions and good walking tours - tailored to what we wanted to do - and throughout are stay asked us how we had got on - very nice touch. The hotel is in a great location, just a short walk from all the tourist attractions but out of the way so you really feel like your escaping after a long day of sights!

Breakfast was nice, quite a big choice of all you would expect!

To top off the great service we explained that we were leaving early on our last day - before the breakfast opens - and asked if there was anything they could do. 5 mins later we had a knock on our door and they had organised some fruit, cartons of orange juice and croissants along with some cookies - a very, very nice touch!

Would certainly recommend hotel golden.

I stayed here for one night on business. I wanted an hotel in this beautiful part of Rome (but, to be fair, I’m totally besotted by every part of this wonderful ochre-coloured city), and chose the Hotel Golden based on TA reviews. The hotel sign was clearly visible from the road but to get to it, you had to go through a large door to an apartment block (after dark the door is locked and you need to ring the bottom bell) and up a stairway to the first floor. It’s a small hotel (in many meanings of the word) and is family-run. In fact the hotel had much more of a pensione feel about it than an hotel. This is fine if that’s what you’re after but it all felt too small and close for me. The reception was tight and my room was extremely small- very little room left as the bed occupied about 90% of the room. It was comfortable and quiet however- though it seemed to have the potential to be noisy as rooms are very close together and to the reception area. Breakfast was fine- certainly nothing special.
I spent little time in my room so it fulfilled a function, but if on holiday here this wouldn’t be my choice of accommodation.

Four of us (adults) stayed, in two rooms, in this lovely hotel for 5 nights in June. We liked that it was a small, family-run hotel. Our room was quite large and had a marvelous bathroom. The type of door and windows they had kept all the noise out! Note that not all area hotels have their air conditioning turned on in June but this one did. Also, there was a computer in the lobby that guests could use. The hotel's breakfast food selection was broad and nearby restaurants for dinner were reasonably priced with well prepared meals. In fact, we ate at Il Pomodoro two nights. My emails with the hotel before we went were always answered quickly. They were a delight to deal with. My only wish was that Hotel Golden was a bit more centrally located. However, it's very near Villa Borghese - a wonderful park you must visit. We laughed ourselves silly riding a "bicycle for four" there on Father's Day. I would stay at this hotel again and highly recommend it.
