First of all, my apologies to Marco for not writing a review sooner! We stayed in this hotel at the very end of our trip and as soon as we got back to the US and into our routine, well you all know how the story goes...
We had been staying at the Relais Teatro Argentina at the beginning of our trip to Italy. The Relais is run by his daughter. Let me just say one thing: THIS FAMILY KNOWS HOW TO RUN HOTELS AND TO MAKE YOU FEEL AT HOME!!!
If you want to know what it feels like to live in Rome, I highly recommend to stay at the Residenza Arco dei Tolomei. You will be in a happening location that offers great bars, good restaurants and amazingly affordable wine from a liquor store a few blocks down the road. So, after you met some locals (NOT tourists!) at a bar the one night, you might want to have that bottle of wine on one of the adorable little balconies attached to the rooms the other night. In any case, this place is a true gem in a part of the city that mostly sees tourists only during the day.
That said, be aware that the Residenza is a well established place. Meaning that you will be surrounded by antique furnishings. So, if you absolutely cannot live without ultra-modern bathroom fixtures, you might want to look elsewhere. BUT you are going to miss an incredible experience.
For the age of the house, the cleanliness is exceptional. The whole layout of the place is so amazing, you feel like you are staying with a family. If I could take that kitchen (which is situated in a small extra-house on the terrace) and bring it to my place, I would. I want that kitchen! ;-)
We took breakfast with all the other guests in the dining room. It was out of this world. My personal favorite was the lemon cake.
A word of caution for us younger people: The other guests seemed to be extremely conservative. We actually saw bibles being read. We didn't encounter any difficulties, but at the somewhat forced socialization during breakfast it became hard to ignore the right-wing tea party comments from the other guests. However, that was one morning out of a year. So this is to be taken with a grain of salt. ;-)
Since we knew Rome already a bit, we didn't need to ask for help. We saw Marco giving splendid tips to spend the day to others though. Over all we had an amazing time there and will definitely come back.
