“Great Place to Stay with a Group”
Reviewed May 4, 2008

Have just stayed 7 nights at Hotel Mari 2 with a group of students. We found the facilities excellent for a group, the staff extremely helpful. The owners went out of their way to make our stay very pleasant even with all their renovations going on. Great location. Would definitely use this hotel again and would recommend it to others.

Staying here was the biggest mistake I have ever made! My advbice to EVERYONE is NEVER go by the photos provided on website, ask appropriate questions and never agree to provide credit card details prior to seeing your room.

My family (husband & 2 children) and I decided to change from where we usually stay when visiting Rome for no other reason than a change. We were returning to Australia after having lived in Italy for the last 12 months. These were the problems experienced by us:-

1. Room for 4 people was on the 4th floor in an adjacent building and was not told there was no lift. We had to carry our own luggage up 4 floors and there was only room for 1 suitcase in the room so the rest of our luggage had to be left unatended in the reception area (not advisable as the area is very seedy). This "quadruple" room was only large enough for 2 people.

2. Insisted on being paid in cash even though they had ,my credit card details. I was not told on the phone about this so I refused. They suggested I go to a bancomat to withdraw the cash and I refused seeing as they had the facilities to accept my card payment and I was not advised before of this policy.

3. Website stated phone in room NO PHONE IN ROOM. I had to prove to the management that this was on their website.

4. Bathroom was restored BUT FILTHY DIRTY! There was mould in the shower and long hairs in the drain. The water did not go down in the basin. After complaining to them they just shrugged their shoulders and gave me a plunger to unblock the drain. Towels not changed in 3 days we stayed there. TV remote didn't work and took many trips down the 4 floors to get it fixed.

After having stayed many times at the Hotel Rosetta in via Cavour this was the biggest mistake EVER. The area may be very close to the station but is very seedy and we didn't feel safe walking around especially at night as the Mari was at the end of a very dark grotty laneway.

The price may include breakfast (as opposed to the Rosetta) but breakfast in a bar in cheap anyway and nothing is worth the bad experience we had after 12 wonderful months living in Italy.

i read the previous review just now, how bad!maybe they changed something, the manager i suppose, as we found a lovely hotel, the location is just perfect and it's really really cheap compared to other accommodation we were offered. our room was a double one 70,00 euro private bathroom, all included (breakfast was ok).
the told us about the works they made in the hotel but as we saw everything is fixed now, as it looks pretty new.
definetely i would go back there, quite nice staff, and they do speak english and spanish! we booked through an agency we paid no extra for the service, very good, they also booked our transfers from and to the airport (Fiumicino was a mess!) but i guess i cannot write their website, if you wish to know it feel free to contact me,

We just returned from a 3-days stay in Rome for the New Year Eve... I started to look for accomodations in Rome in mid-October since I imagined the New Year Eve period to be very busy...after thousands of availability requests to various hotels, I found the web page of Mari 2 which seemed to be a gracious place (for people without too many pretentions) with a reasonable price. How wrong I was!! The hotel web page and photos are totally misleading!

The hotel is situated in a dirty, scruffy street mostly populated by immigrants (chinese, indian....).

At our arrival we relized the reception to be not on the ground floor of the "hotel" but in a separated area. Our room were on the fifth floor...No lift at all! We had to carry our luggages up for five floors with rusty steel doors and dirty walls..and it also seemed that building to have not only hotel rooms but also private apartments complete with doorplates with names!! Isn't it funny?

The room was really too small for two people with absoultely not space to open our suitcase on the floor. The bathroom probably dates back to the 1960...

To conclude, the breakfast was absolutely unacceptable for what we paid, just some rolls, coffee and hot water. Depressing.

I hope that after having red this review, nobody will be intentioned to book this "hotel"... Spend some more money but book somewhere else and possibly not near Termini Railway Station!

We booked the Marri 2 hotel for a long weekend near to Rome's tourist attractions. It's tucked down a rather scruffy back street and on arrival by hire car, we struggled to find parking, eventually squeezing in down the street from the hotel; we lugged our bags to the hotel. We waited some time for a room allocation, then were sent up to the top (4th) floor. There was no lift and no help and the staircase became more and more like a Turkish prison as we climbed - rusty steel doors, rubbish in the stairwell, dirty walls.

Inside the room was clean and modern but really small, one of those rooms where you need to go outside to turn round. My girlfriend ran the sink for a wash and promptly flooded the bathroom floor - the sink drain leaked copiously! We asked to change our room but the man on the desk appeared to have no authority to do anything and had to phone the owner for every decision. After some trouble convincing the management that there was a problem, we eventually were promised another room, which had yet to be serviced but which we could move into later in the day. We were told to report back at 14:00. We did a little sightseeing and reported back at 14:15 to be chastised for turning up late. Eventually we were shown our new room, even smaller than the first but , fortunately, with no leaking sink.

Breakfast is taken in another building over the road, and it's mediocre.

To summarise:

Good points:

1. Funny if you have a sense of humour for this sort of hotel.
2. Near to several of Rome's tourist attractions by foot.

Bad Points:

1. Rude staff with poor or no English.
2. Miserable location in a dirty street and scruffy outlook from the rooms' windows.
3. Difficult and limited parking
4. Tiny rooms, (at least the two we saw)
5. No lift
6. Poor value for money, even for a 1 Star hotel.
