Nicolas Inn was a wonderful place to stay. Beautiful, sparkling clean, and convenient to everything. Melissa and Francois are wonderful hosts and full of advice and recommendations. I felt like I was visiting old friends in Rome. A great place to stay in Rome.

They only have 4 rooms so it is not easy to get in . Melissa is from the states and has married Francois . They both speak English and understand Americans . The reason it is better than family is at night they go across the street to their apartment. In the day they do a wonderful job of keeping the place clean and are very helpful with all the normal tourist requests. Breakfast is a kick. They send you to a bakery up the street and the food is fine but people watching the locals is a great way to start the day,

Melissa and Francois were very friendly and helpful. My wife and I took them up on all of their restaurant suggestions and were pleased with all of them. We would reccommend the Nicolas Inn to Family and Friends. Great location with great people. They earn ***** 5-Stars.!!!

Rick Steves' was right.

As everyone has already said: Francois & Melissa run this place excellently, and really went above what most hosts do for you. Francois met us on the street (because the address numbering in Rome doesn't make any sense). After showing us the room, he personally escorted us to nearby restaurants, including the breakfast cafe - just so we knew exactly where they were and skipped the tourist-trap places. All recommendations from him and Melissa were great.
The room and bathroom were spacious - and actually had plenty of room for personal toiletries. The bed was firm in a good way. I wear earplugs, so noise is never an issue for me anywhere I go. "Mack's" they work.
Easy walks everywhere, just keep a map handy. I used the Roma Pass map the most, rather than the free one in the room.

If we make it back to Rome, we'll stay at Nicolas Inn again. It is easy to get to, easy to walk from, and they arranged our taxis to the Vatican and the airport - and made sure we got the right taxi each time as well.

Tips:
1) Getting there:You can walk from the train station, or from the train station take the metro to either the Cavour or Colosseo stops, or take the #75 bus from outside the train station. (Walk to the info point in the square outside the train station and ask to be sure, but you catch the #75 bus just to the left of the info point). The bus ride is great for less walking and is what we did with our luggage. You go most of the way down Via Cavour, past the Cavour Metro stop, and just past the yellow post office awning.
2) Getting to the airport: Francois arranged a driver for us to the airport for 50euro. It was a black Mercedes. The driver goes around the Colosseum & Arch of Constentine, Palatine hill, Circus Maximus, the Pyramid, & St. Paul's Outside the Walls. A nice review of places we went to. That might be the way any taxi would go.
3) Breakfast: in a cafe on the same side of the street just a few doors down. Melissa said "get anything you want" so we did. I usually had 2 big pastries and tea, sometimes OJ. We also went there for dinner one night and it was ok - I'd give it 4 stars for breakfast, 3 stars for dinner. The staff there are efficient, and can be hilarioius if you talk with them.
4) Gelato: Be sure to hit Giolitti's. Pay first, get gelato second. Gnutella flavor.

I contacted nicolas inn after my parents had recommended them, and booked some dates in September. Melissa and Francois couldn't have been more helpful - the rooms were clean, very spacious, with air con (perfect after a long hot day) and very secure (big old door to get in, combination safe). The rooms were cleaned every day and new towels were provided each day. They even printed out bus timetables and my boarding passes for thr flIght home. Very accomodating and helpful - will definitely visit again. Thank you both!!

Excellent location and a great value. Not to mention the wonderful hospitality of Melissa and Francois! From the moment we arrived we felt we were at home in our own neighborhood thanks to Francois and Melissa's gracious hospitality. They were great in letting us know where things were in the city and the local places to eat, etc. The location of the Inn was perfect for sightseeing and experiencing a bit of the local flavor as opposed to seeing only the tourist hot spots. And the room and bed were very comfortable and clean! When we return to Rome we will definitely return to Nicholas Inn!

My wife and I recently stayed at the Nicolas Inn. We really enjoyed our visit and the location of the Inn. We were very pleased with the Inn and the hospitality provided by Melissa and Francois. The room was very clean and their recommendations were perfect. As a matter of fact, moving to the St. Regis for our last 2 nights was a real let down in comparison.
