“Just plain weird.”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

Being Rome novice's my boyfriend and arrived at the hotel by Taxi, using the hotel postcode programmed into the SatNav.
It was getting quite dark by this point and it seemed as if we had been dropped off in an alley outside a derelict old horror-movie style building titled 'il covo.' The was a sign on the door (in italian) so, we, being English couldn't understand it. We ended up spending 30 minutes asking neighbouring hotel and restaurant staff what the hell was going on... they helped us out and a kind waiter walked us to il covo's reception which was 20 metres up from the road where the taxi had dropped us off earlier.
The reception was quaint, small and strange. The receptionist, Carlo, was not friendly and the checking in process was long. We had to wait another 20minutes in reception for Carlo to finish having a conversation with two German old lady customers. They could only speak German. Carlo spoke English and Italian - but, he did not speak German.
Eventually, he began walking us to our room which was in a different building one block away from reception. He bumped into someone he knew on the way and began a full blown conversation with him. Yet again, we had to wait. Then, the cheek of it, he turned to me and said... "one moment, I have to go do something..." I cut through his rubbish and politely explained to him that we had been travelling all day and just wanted to be shown to our room. He complied. Remember, I'm half Italian, I know... if Italians can mess you around, they will, especially if they're Roman and you're a tourist.

When we FINALLY got to our room, it was clean, spacious, pleasant. Checking out was also a long arduous process with another rude member of staff. The hotel's location is really central, which is great! But they're are so many unclear or non existent road signs and as a result, you will get lost.
Our stay was brief and we will NOT be staying here again. Too much stress - who needs stress on a holiday!?

The rooms rented by Il Covo are scattered around several buildings and I was in Antica Locanda, a small hotel two minutes up the road from the main Il Covo building. The staff is very friendly and helpful. There are no lifts and I was up four flights of narrow wooden stairs, which was daunting at the end of a long day's sightseeing, but I knew this in advance and it wouldn't put me off staying here again. On the plus side, a few more steps above me was the beautiful roof garden, supplied with lots of tables and chairs, loungers and outdoor furniture, all surrounded by plants and climbers. On a couple of evenings, we took a bottle of wine and a pizza up here and had a relaxed evening under the stars. I loved my room, which had a traditional feel - lace curtains, shutters and big brass bed. There isn't much storage space - a tiny wardrobe and no drawers - but I managed. Two people might have found it cramped, however. The bathroom was very clean and modern. The air conditioning was very noisy, but essential in the very high temperatures in July.
Breakfast was plentiful and delicious - juice, bread, croissant, jam and butter, yogurt, cheese and Prosciutto, coffee. It was served 8-9.30am and could have started earlier, as sometimes one has to leave early for a trip.
The street was narrow and cobbled, lots of nice restaurants and bars around. The tiny Piazza Maria dei Monti nearby was a gathering place for locals in the evening, who perched on the steps of the central fountain drinking and chatting, but there was never any trouble and we joined them on occasion! The location is ideal, a few minutes walk from the Colosseum, easy walk to the Forum and all the other main sights. I would certainly stay here again.

I stayed at this hotel during my second visit to Rome at 23rd of july. Similar to previous traveler we book for II Covo but they gave us a room in an apartment block which was 10 minutes walk away from the reception and the cafe for breakfast. The condition of the room was bad and worst facility. The tragic started on the first night.
In the middle of our sleeping, our hotel room caught fire. Fortunately was no one was injured but our baggage and luggage were all burnt into ashes. We were very angry about the hotel staff and also the way they settle us after the fire (Of course, we have no clothes to change no food to eat no money to spend and even didn't have a place to rest after a nightmare).

First, before me and my family fell asleep the room was blackout for twice (This showed that how the hotel never put an effort in maintain the safety of their customers).
Second , when the blackout happened for the third time i quickly rushed to the reception desk which was located 10 minutes walk away from the apartment. The bloody stupid staff was unprofessional and irresponsible. First, as a receptionist you MUST and HAVE TO polish your English in order to communicate with your customers. (This showed that they are very careless in taking good care of their customers).
Third, when we already explained to the hotel staff what had happened after so many times of blackout the hotel staff ignored us and replied in a nonsense answer. We were already looked panic and faster asked him to follow us to the room but he walked very slow even after seeing us run like mad.
Fourth, when we reached the apartment we can see that actually our room was already caught fire. As a receptionist or a hotel staff, the first thing you should do is evacuate the other customers or the residences inside the apartment and help us in moving out some belongings. However, the stupid ever receptionist was just standing outside there looking at us and didn't even help anything. Lucky we met some helpful passer by to pass this nightmare.
Fifth, the hotel personnel cancel our booking for the first night as she said was an apology for our lost ( we initially booked for 2 nights). However, they refused to compensate for our second stay. I mean, hello are you crazy? Me and my family lost our money and luggage in the fire and this happened because of the bad maintenance of your room and you wanted us to PAY for the second night? And the worst part is they still dare to assign us into an old apartment which was also located quite far away from the reception!!!

Yes, the hotel is located very near to the metro station and even colosseum. As a traveler we always looking for a hotel with good location to save time for traveling. But i wanted everyone to know the true face of this hotel. They aren't care about your feelings or even your life, what they cared for is money only. If i would agreed to pay for the second stay at their hotel they will be nice to me, but when i turned them down they straight changed face and don't even want to talk to me. this is how they treated their customers who just faced an accident. Make sure you check where is your room if you want to book this hotel.

We booked into the Il Covo but on arrival were taken to a dark and dingy room in an apartment block. We had to walk some distance to a cafe for breakfast and when we complained they showed little concern. Make sure that you are actually staying at the Il Covo and not an annex!

Room Tip: Make sure you are staying at the hotel you booked, not an annex

A friend and I stayed in a double bed room at Il Covo bed and breakfast for a couple of days recently. We found this place to be a great deal! The free breakfast at the family-owned restaurant was great, the staff were friendly and helpful, the room was clean and had everything we needed for our stay. One recommendation, there was only enough hot water for one person in the morning and one at night, but that worked out fine for us. The rooms aren't a 5-star place, but you are in Rome, out visiting sights and not in the room all day long so it was fantastic for us. Our room was safe and secure without a doubt, great for a couple of girls. Also, we were able to walk to every sight in Rome that we wanted to see without a problem, but taxi's are also available. There is also a fantastic restaurant (Le Tavernelle), a gelateria and the Ice Bar just a few blocks away which was great. We will come here again on our next trip to Rome and would recommend this to anyone looking for a great deal with friendly staff and a place to sleep after a long day of sight-seeing.

We had a great experience at Il Covo. They offer very well located apartments within a short walk to the metro that will take you anywhere you need to go. The area is very safe, with nice restaurants around. We walked everywhere with no issues.
The family is extremely nice and the rooms are simple but elegant. Although we didn't take advantage of the free breakfast at the family-owned restaurant, they offered free appetizers and drinks instead. We highly recommend it!

Room Tip: Be aware the rooms are spread out and you might need to walk uphill. Don't let that scare you of...
