“Comfortable accommodation and excellent location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2013

We stayed at the Emerald room for six nights. The room and the bathroom were spacious enough with nice contemporary furniture. The Emerald room faces the back of the building which is a big open space with the back part of other surrounding buildings so you have no special view but that was OK because it was absolutely quiet during the night. The mattress and the pillows were fantastic, vey comfortable. We sleeped and rested very well every night after hours and hours of walking and wandering around Rome. The location is very convenient, the Manzoni station of metro line A is very close (200 mtrs away) so you can get to the center and the Vatican area very quickly.Besides that, the Colosseum and Roman Forum is a 15-20 minutes walk away. The breakfast, a coffee and a croissant were served at cafe ciamei, a few steps away from the entrance of the El Dorado B&B.The coffee was very good and the croissant fresh and tasty but we had to adjust to the Italian way of taking the breakfast quickly and standing in the bar, not bad though.Overall it was clean (still could improve a little bit in small details but Ok it's not 5 stars), they changed towels every day and the area seemed safe even late at night. All the personnel were kind and helpful and we were given a map by Gianluca who highlighted the most important sights of Rome.In conclusion, I believe El Dorado Colosseum B&B offers good value for money and I would certainly recommend it to others.

Our three night stay at the El Dorado was just about perfect. The location is great - a 15 minute walk to the Colosseum and all the tourist areas nearby. There is also good bus and tram connections, as well as a Metro stations, within two blocks, especially nice if you are coming to Rome by bus, train or airplane. The staff is not on-site full time, but were there when we asked them and attended to all our needs. This facility is a set of converted rooms in an older building which also includes residential condominiums. We were on the second floor, and their is a nice (but small) lift. We had a late checkout on departure, and they kept our bags and had them available when we were ready.

The "B&B" portion is fulfilled with a short walk to a very nice and friendly nearby bar. Espresso, cappucino, or fresh squeezed orange juice and a roll are standard fare. Everyone is friendly. There are several grocery outlets a short walk away, as well as sandwich shops, pizza by the slice and a number of nicer but very affordable restaurants in the neighborhood, too.

The quarters are basic, but very comfortable: good beds and bedding, the AC worked well, and drapes and shutters to cut down on the city lights and noise. We were on the street side, and it is probably quieter on the back side of the building, but we really didn't have any complaints. There is a desk area, small fridge, wardrobe with safe and bedside reading lamps. Extra pillows and blankets were available. The in-suite bath was smallish, but had all that was needed and the supply of hot water in the shower never faltered. If you like bar soap in the shower rather than body gel-style, bring your own, but they do provide shampoo. The in-room Internet connection was great, and though we didn't use the Italian TV much, it seemed to have a good variety of choices (for Italy) and picture.

We live a 3 hour bus ride from Rome, so have wanted to find a place that we could plan to stay comfortably on a "regular" basis. The El Dorado is definitely a good option: it is well priced for its central location, clean and comfortable, and less than 45 minutes from the Tiburtina bus station to the front door on easy Metro connections. Hard to beat for the money.

We will certainly plan to stay there again and can recommend it to others based on what they are offering.

Room Tip: A room off the street (not on the front of the building) will likely be the quietest.

On the plus side, it's 200m from the Manzoni metro station (Line A) and 15 minutes time walk from Colosseum. The area is relatively quiet at night and we felt safe there. The room, exactly like in the photos we had seen, had new furnishings, very comfortable bed and pillows and was cleaned every day (maybe not perfectly, but still..). The wifi connection was excellent. They also offer breakfast (coffee and croissant) in a nearby cafe (1 minute from the B&B's entrance). We used the air-conditioning for heating and it was all good. Lastly, the owner as well as all the people working there were very accommodating and even brought us a map and pointed out all the places we should visit and where we should eat.

Downside, the room's soundproofing was virtually inexistent. We could hear everything that went on in the street as well as in the rest of the B&B like there are no windows or doors. Late at night we also heard noise and footsteps from the floor above. We were pretty exhausted, though and slept through all of that! Also, beware of the numbering in the street. The B&B is at number 73, though the numbers jump from 113 to 77 (if I'm not mistaken) at one point.

Despite of the disadvantages, we recommend the place and wouldn't mind staying there again sometime.

Room Tip: We asked for the Amethyst room and even though the owner confirmed it, we were given the Silver room...
