Reservations handled very poorly. Had to cancel due to illness, gave two months notice. Was assured there would be no charge. One night was charged to my account anyway. Have called for weeks; various staff members, including the hotel owner, blame each other for the mistake, promise to take care of it and never do. I have never written a review before, but it is important that people do not patronize a hotel with dishonest management.

We were apprehensive about our stay at Casa Banzo after recent reviews on this site. We booked it after seeing it on The Guardian's top 10 places to stay in Rome. As others have said it is not easy to find and despite asking for directions from the hotel they were not helpful. However when we did find it we found the staff to be very friendly and helpful even when getting them out of bed as we had misunderstood the times for breakfast. The room was small, clean and yes, did not have the luxuries of a large chain, but we were staying in a 16th century house in the middle of Rome which more than made up for it. The breakfast was enhanced by meeting friendly people from different countries who valued the unique experience of Casa Banzo. If we were staying in Rome again we would probably not return to Casa Banzo but would stay in a more luxurious hotel with a bath to soak away our aches and pains from tramping the Roman streets but we are certainly glad we experienced staying in such a unique place.

The location was great. Close to a lot of attractions. The place was very difficult to find and no one answered the buzzer when we got there so we were sitting outside until we ran into the person running the hotel. They requested cash which was strange because I don't make a habit of carrying 600 Euro on me. They eventually took my credit card. The room was small and kind of dingy. There's 8 other rooms and I don't know what the others looked like but ours was dark and not very cozy but we didn't plan on spending time in there anyway. At least it was clean. We only saw one person the 3 days we were there and she was not very friendly. She scolded us and the other guests for showing up for breakfast at 9:25 when the service stopped at 9:30 and dining area closed at 10. She gave us a bad feeling about the bed and breakfast as a whole. BOTTOM LINE: The location was good but you can probably find a nicer hotel for the money and definitely friendlier service.

Casa Banzo was a great disappointment. We had seen a recommendation for it in the Guardian UK. Towels (if you can call them such; flimsy dishtowels is more like it) were laundered every two days; the bathroom was covered in ants, and on the last night, we were told that we'd have to leave the hotel because there was a problem with overbooking, but that they'd assist us in moving somewhere else. We walked around the neighborhood by ourselves and found a place with a comparable room for E60 less. Then the staff at Casa Banzo took us to the very same place that we'd found on our own, and told us that the rate there would be the same E140 that Casa Banzo had been charging. Needless to say, we felt swindled. On the upside, the location is good. However, overall, a disappointment.

My husband and I stayed at the Casa Banzo for three nights while in Rome. This is the place to stay if you want a real experience... it's a cute little hotel/bed and breakfast in the center of Trastevere. It can be a bit difficult to find if you don't know your way around the area, but it is VERY close to Campo di Fiori and all the main attractions of central Rome and public transportation (all are in Largo d'Argentina, just a few "blocks" away). This hotel doesn't have an elevator so be prepared to carry your bags up the flights of stairs, and there is a heavy iron gate that you have to open to access some of the rooms... so if you are in need of assistance or convenience this is not the place to stay. We didn't have a chance to eat breakfast, but we heard it was good. The room was pretty clean. It lacks the amenities of the bigger hotels, but for the experience of staying in such a lovely building it is a fair trade.
